Hesham,

This is the large-scale, external augmentor V/STOL model tested in the NASA Ames Research Center's 40' x 80' wind tunnel in the late '70s and early '80s.

In a sense, this model is a follow-on from the large-scale models of the 1960s (first wing a straight wing, later replaced with a swept wing of the same aspect ratio). A flight research vehicle was projected (which was to be built by Boeing).

For more on your model, search D. B. Garland. For more on the earlier models, search D. C. Whittley.

[Added] Oops, image link corrected.

BTW, the 1966 model was part-funded by the CDRB (Canadian Defence Research Board, now DRDC). The engine in your model would be one of the 24 J97-GE-3 UAV turbojets put in storage at Ames after the 1971 termination of the AQM-91 Compass Arrow project.

There are a number of papers by Don Whittley available on the web. Unfortunately, most are for purchase as 'hard copies'.

From Aviation Week 15/72, two photos of the model and a 3-view of
the proposed testbed, using the DHC-5.

Cheers Jens!

I'd read Whittley's description of the pylon-mounted engines for the augmentor-wing Buffalo but never seen a depiction before. Many thanks ;D

As it seems to be of special interest, here the drawings from the above
mentioned issue of Aviation Week, describing the intended arrangement
of engines and flaps.

Amazing stuff ... many thanks Jens!

By the date of this Aviation Week article, I presume that all this work was feeding into the DHP-72 concept. http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1629.0

Model of a testbed for the "augmentor wing" exhibited at Le Bourget 1971, from Aviation Magazine 565.
The caption describes the Canadair CL-246 as an aircraft that would make use of the research done for this unnamed testbed.
For the CL-246, see this topic: http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,13862.0.html

PS: Why is this in "Aerospace" instead of "Postwar projects" ?
