I've trawled the sea of Google and while I've come up with a few photos,
so far no drawings of any sort.

Anybody have any details on the project?

Thanks, Jon

Hej Jon, I made this 3V some years ago.

Derived from the high speed project D-530 designed by Castello-Henrot to beat the speed record for land-based aircraft set by Udet on the He-100V2 (He6112U) on June the 5th 1938 (Project dropped due to the un-availability of the selected powerplant: An Hispano-Suiza 12Y specially boosted to deliver up to 1800hp), the D-550 was powered by a production HS 12Ycrs rated 900hp. Compared with the fighter D-520, the D-550 was smaller and lighter.
Wind-tunnel tests performed in March 1939.
First flight on June the 23rd by Marcel Doret.
In the meantime, on March the 30th, 1939, Hans Dieterle had set the speed record at 746,606 km/h on the He6100V8 (beating the absolute speed record of Angello with the Macchi MC-72). On month later, Fritz Wendel on the Me-209V1 pushed the limit to 755,138 km/h...out of reach for the D-550 and her 900hp.
On November the 22th, 1939, the D-550 was the first French airplane to pass the 700km/h limit with a speed of 702,2km/h at 6000m.
Last flight performed on May the 27th, 1940.
Damaged on April the 4th, 1944, during Francazal bombing.
Scrapped just after the war.

Span: 8,20m
Area: 10,79m2
Lenght: 8,02m
Est. MTOW: Around 1800kg.

Philippe

Thanks Justo, you da man.

Any possibility of your Spanish Civil War aircraft books being republished?
Please Please.

They're hovering as the $300 mark in the used book world.

I've been after them as well, but too expenive for my budget , I think it would be cheaper to hire a large lorry and go and steal all Justo's files :D

A beautiful side view of the D.550 (possibly cut out from a wind-tunnel test photo) found on Flickr:

Hi! D.550 racer and it's derivative D.551 fighter.

http://www.historyofwar.org/articles/weapons_dewoitine_d551.html
"In 1939 Emile Dewoitine had built the D.550 to make an attempt on the air speed record. It had been developed from the D.520 fighter, but with modifications to increase its speed that included a reduced wing span and limited fuel capacity. On 23 October the D.550 reached 420 mph at 19,680 feet, an increase of 90 mph over the D.520. Its military potential was quickly recognised, and work began on the D.551.

The D.551 used the Hispano-Suiza 12Y51 engine, giving 1,300 hp. It was to be armed with five 7.5mm machine guns, one in the engine and four in the wings. It was designed to be easy to produce, and it was hoped that it would only need 4,000 man hours per aircraft. Work advanced quickly at the SNCAM plant at Bagneres-de-Bigorre. Sixteen prototype aircraft were ordered by the French Air Force, and two more built privately by Dewoitine, but none were complete when work was stopped by the armistice (although five were close). The D.551 had an estimated speed of 411 mph at 19,680 feet.

Plans were also in place to produce the D.552, which would have had an additional pair of machine guns in the wings. Two D.551s were converted to unarmed sports planes under the D.560 designation. These aircraft were ready by January 1941, but were then forbidden to fly. All eighteen D.551s were then scrapped. "

I haven't been able to connect to airwar.ru these last few days. Anybody got better luck? This would be a huge bummer if they were gone.

Justo, wouldn't you be able, in such a situation, to make a pdf version of your books? Some writers have their work available for download on amazon for a Dollar, King and Knowledge.
