Cutaway drawing of DCNS Barracuda-class nuclear-powered attack submarine. The first submarine will be named Suffren, and will be followed by the Duguay-Trouin, Dupetit-Thouars, Duquesne, Tourville and De Grasse, the build order of these five following submarines being subject to change.

11 years on… (!) 1st of class Suffren continues working up to IOC.

She has spent 220+ days at sea over the last 17 months (her first dive was in April 2020). This includes a warm water deployment to the Caribbean, firing trials of all her weapons (including the new MDCN cruise missile), trials with the new special forces dry deck shelter, and now participation in her first major exercise, Polaris 21. Moving along nicely…

Meanwhile, launch of sub #2 Duguay Trouin is imminent… either this month or January.

1st of class Suffren completes her first operational deployment escorting the French carrier strike group. She has now completed 450+ days at sea since first sea trials in April 2020, including 190 days at sea in 2022.

2nd sub Duguay Trouin is due to start sea trials imminently.

"En tout cas, j'ai plus d'appétit qu'un Barracuda..." "Ba-rra-cu-da !!"

They are welcome. The Rubis are now as old as my old self. When they don't turn floating BBQ, then hybrids.

From what I read in various news reports:

- Barracuda program is 90% complete. 3 SSNs delivered, SSN#4 is about to start Harbour Acceptance Trials prior to lighting off the nuclear plant, SSN#5's hull is already sealed (visible in some of the pics above), and SSN#6's major hull modules are complete (e.g. propulsion module)
- SSNs #4-6 are in "Batch 2" configuration with unspecified improvements
- Build times have been cut from 13 to 7 years for the last SSN. This opens up the possibility of additional SSN deliveries for France before 2035 (Australia should be kicking themselves IMHO)
- Production sites are ramping down and transitioning to the SSBN program and Dutch Orka SSKs

Good, good...

With any luck we'll get our subs on time.

For what it's worth Indonesia's timeline for its 2 Scorpenes is even more agressive than the Dutch Orka SSK contract. The Scorpenes must be delivered in 2031 and 2032, only 6.5 & 7.5 years from the contract effective date (May 2025).

Though this is with local production in Indonesia (I'm not sure if that helps or hurts the build time) and the Scorpene design is mostly off the shelf.

I don't think that this has a big impact on the construction deadlines but that the option of building the SM in the country that ordered it is a very good option that could allow other countries less close to France to place an order with it by having great control over the construction and monitoring of the SM, for me it is above all a commercial asset.

Yeah, maybe post that in English?

I mean, you're free to use Google translate, but please use english?

so are you
If you are attempting to contribute to a topic on a primarily English language forum the expectation is that you will be making your posts in English (and using a translator if not), much like when non-English language sources are provided it is expected that a translation be provided along with them.

@Pierrick_FRA

Comme il s'agit d'une communauté internationale, pour des raisons pratiques, la langue anglaise a été choisie comme langue de communication. La traduction automatique fonctionne bien pour ceux qui ont une faible maîtrise de l'anglais.

Since this is an international community, for practical purposes, English language was chosen as our communication language. Machine translation works nice for those with lower English proficiency.

So the French now have 5x more operational attack subs than the Royal Navy (3 Suffren class and 2 older Rubis class)… and with 10 operational crews no less.

Who would have thought that could happen one day!
They also have arguably a more usable carrier air wing, with less downtime to maintenance. Something discussed in the F-35 thread recently with regards to the RAF/RN F-35s.

The French Navy is no joke.

Isn't that the (potentially) 2nd major leak for the Suffren class?!

The tone, message content and alias would suggest a disgruntled employee (again), by the way.

Notice that there is zero development in the online press, at least the bits accessible via Google news. It happened just 7 days ago but in 1 month we will wonder if it ever did.
Gosh, a leak of 1T byte of military data, a gov and head of state that play coy and the press remains silent and stays cold as a marble stone...

Remind me the The mystery of the (Piper) Aztec? (LY-LOO). Same thing, 15 days later, nothing. A plot thicker than the Bermuda triangle missing boats but our intrepid journalists turn their heads away.

French Navy starts nuclear reactor on 4th Barracuda type attack submarine

Sea trials should start in March or April.

The French SSN fleet is in very solid shape... for those keeping score between the French and British SSN fleets:

3 - 1 ... # of operational Barracuda vs Astute SSNs
6 - 1 ... # of operational Barracuda vs Astute crews

5 - 1 ... # of total operational MN vs RN SSNs (including older Rubis class)
10 - 1 ... # of total operational MN vs RN crews
