DOD eyes $2.7 billion proposal to wrap half the planet in multidomain test range
The Defense Department is exploring a vast new test and training complex that would wrap around half the planet, reaching across the near entirety of the Pacific Ocean to support large-scale experimentation of advanced warfighting concepts, a move recommended by a classified study on the future of U.S. military superiority

AI locates and designates targets then sends all data to available strike platforms. Human operator approves target imagery before any attack. This test put the autonomous ISR package into an F-16 but it would actually be a drone and the drone might be armed if the AI package isn't too big. With cross domain combat, the strike platform might also be an armed land robot. Human approval would then come from a remote command center.

Leveraging the power of artificial intelligence, the autonomous ISR system, integrated into an F-16 through a Lockheed Martin-developed pod solution, was able to detect and identify the location of the target, automatically route to the target, and capture an image to confirm the target in a simulated, denied communications environment.

... However, pending a fundamental transformation of the global system, deterrence will remain a major factor in international politics. At the very least, it should serve as a “time-buying strategy” until such fundamental political changes occur. This requires supporters of mainstream deterrence to walk a fine line between defending the concept without trivializing its risks. When it comes to deterring non-military, non-kinetic, and non-existential threats, however, even greater care must be taken not to oversell the concept. Classic deterrence is implemented by governments. The idea that the private sector, financial institutions and other players can be integrated into a coherent, multidimensional deterrence concept against a host of non-military threats risks promising much more than can be delivered.

Conventional precision deterrence must be real if major conflict is to be avoided..
