Nice of them to censor the back of the PAR. Scratching/blurring out numbers, censoring bits like this...it amuses me that the photographers think they're making any difference whatsoever.

:-\ Looks like the Chinese has copied the AN/SLQ-32 EWS. Look at the vertical row of walkways, there's a AN/SLQ-32 lookalike on the top one.

The Chinese have announced that the Shi Lang / Varyag will be used for training and 'scientific research', and that carrier pilot training is underway:

Interesting that Shi Lang was the name of the admiral who conquered Taiwan in the 17th Century. Maybe the scientific research will be aimed at discovering if the Higgs Boson can be found in Taiwan? ::)

DALIAN, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's refitted aircraft carrier left its shipyard at Dalian Port in northeast Liaoning Province on Wednesday morning to start its first sea trial.
Military sources said that the first sea trial was in line with schedual of the carrier's refitting project and would not take a long time. After returning from the sea trial, the aircraft carrier will continue refit and test work.
The carrier was originally built by the former Soviet Union which named it Varyag yet failed to complete the ship's construction before collapsing in 1991. The still-unnamed aircraft carrier was an empty shell. Ukraine disarmed it and removed its engines before selling it to China.
... sadly no photos by now.

And Taiwan is wasting no time making sure their readiness is not questioned. This is a picture of an exhibit of their Hsiung Feng III missile.

Long time without any updates !!

By now the Varyag has performed two very short trips and after another recoating of the flight-deck she's now still at Dalian harbour ... but now she's lying much deeper in the water than before and since Fryday has a Z-8 SAR helicopter on board !

China's refitted aircraft carrier platform sets sail for 2nd trial

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/china/2011-11/29/c_131276715.htm

BEIJING, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- China's refitted aircraft carrier sailed for its second sea trial on Tuesday for relevant scientific research and experiments, Chinese Ministry of National Defense said in a press release.

According to the press release, prior to sailing, the aircraft carrier had completed all the refitting and testing work as scheduled after its first sea trial in August.

The carrier was originally built by the former Soviet Union which named it Varyag, yet failed to complete the ship's construction before collapsing in 1991. The still-unnamed aircraft carrier was an empty shell. Ukraine disarmed it and removed its engines before selling it to China.

The vessel, an Admiral Kuznetsov class aircraft carrier which measures 304.5 meters long and 37 meters wide, with a displacement of 58,500 metric tons, has been totally refitted for its new role as a research and training platform in China.

The vessel departed for its first trial from a port in Dalian, a city in northeast China's Liaoning Province on Aug. 10.

The building of an aircraft carrier is a long and complex project. In the building process, there will be a series of scientific research experiments and training exercises, and such activities are routine and normal.

Currently, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, Spain, Italy, India, Brazil and Thailand, operate a total of 21 active-service aircraft carriers.

The UK has an active service carrier? Where?

They are still counting Illustrious as a Carrier even though we no longer have the Harrier aircraft to operate off her.

Back on topic we'll see what this shake down cruise brings as i imagine she will require a number of these to get the carrier ship shape.

Trumpter are working to release a 1/350th scale kit of the Shiland(ex Varyag) by adapting their Admiral Kuznetsov moulds to match the PLAN rebuild. Hopefully they will do the same in 1/700 and issue the Chineses PLAN aircraft.

China Prepping Varyag (Shi Lang) for East & South China Sea Territorial Patrols (Asia Security Watch)

Xu Hongmeng, the PLA’s deputy Navy Commander, told reporters at the National People’s Congress in Beijing on Thursday that, “The trials have gone very smoothly, and we plan to put it into commission this year.” This is the first time that the PLA has officially mentioned the timing for the inaugural test.

“Trial runs for the Shenyang J-15, a carrier-based fighter aircraft that will operate from the Varyag are also in the pipeline,” Xu added. Take-off and landing tests for the aircraft are expected to be carried out this month, along with further test runs of the Varyag.

Once it goes into commission, the vessel will be based in Hainan Island in southern China to cover the East China Sea and South China Sea, which are the sites of territorial disputes with Japan and other Southeast Asian countries. Tension in these seas is expected to heighten when the Varyag starts its official duties there.

The aircraft [sic?] will patrol the waters off Korea’s Ieo Island, which China claims is an extension of the continental shelf that falls under its jurisdiction.

Thanks, but honestly I have still some very strong reservations against this report:

1. The PLAN deputy Commander won't call that ship "Varyag" and even more the name "Shi Lang" is still a rumour.

2. That ship will (IMO) be a test-ship and surely not an operational carrier than will "patrol the waters off Korea's Ieo Island".

As such I think that's simply a report pasted together by Korean reporter based on what is assumed in different reports + mixed up with the fear that this carrier might sail against Korea ! ;)

Going on patrol without an airwing? That's one expensive Corvette.

Spotted in a Aviation Week article on modernisation of the PLAAF (emphasis mine).

Shenyang’s J-15, a near-facsimile of the Sukhoi Su-33 carrier-based fighter, is leading a new era of growth for the PLA navy’s air force. Having undergone land-based testing over the last year with the short-takeoff but arrested-recovery (Stobar) system to be used by China’s first aircraft carrier, the refurbished Russian Varyag, the J-15 could begin carrier-based testing later this year and when fully developed could prove as potent as the Boeing F/A-18E/F. An initial carrier air wing will include Changhe Z-8 airborne early warning and control helicopters with airborne early warning radar, and perhaps Russian Kamov Ka-32 anti-submarine and Ka-31 AEW helicopters.

A twin-turboprop E-2 class airborne early warning/antisubmarine warfare (AEW/ASW) aircraft is under development, perhaps for conventional-takeoff-and-landing (CTOL) on two nuclear carriers that may follow two more non-nuclear Stobar carriers. In November 2011, images emerged of a long-awaited ASW version of the Shaanxi Y-8 “New High” medium transport, which will finally give the navy an oceanic ASW and maritime surveillance platform.

....In 2005 a Chinese official said that an “F-35”-class program was being considered by Chengdu. China also has long been interested in short-takeoff-and-vertical-landing (Stovl) fighters, and long-standing Russian and Chinese reports point to a possible Chengdu program based on technology from the Yakovlev Yak-141, a supersonic Stovl prototype tested in the late 1980s.

By the way, this is probably not worth its own topic, but here's some good quality photos from inside the Soviet Admiral Kuznetsov Carrier:

http://igor113.livejournal.com/27473.html

There's something funny and sad in the background one quarter of the way of the pictures...

http://newpacificinstitute.org/asw/?p=10613

Chinese efforts to shore up holdings in the East China Sea became are becoming more apparent with China’s State Oceanic Administration claiming Socotra Rock (Korean: Ieodo/이어도, Chinese: Suyan Rock/苏岩礁) as part of Chinese jurisdictional waters, and open to Chinese maritime patrols.

This statment coincides with reports that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy’s (PLAN) aircraft carrier ex-Varyag (Shi Lang, 施琅) would be ready to conduct patrols of the East and South China Seas by year’s end.

Hmmmm.

Doesn't it have arresting gear installed now? Wouldn't it be interesting to see a couple Russian Su-33s operate off it during their joint exercise?
