Whoa. They really have a plans to modernize pre-World War I superdreadnought in 1950s? What kind of modernizations were proposed? The second one apparently involved mid-hull turret removal?

What are the colour codes?

Post Updated. Forgot to add references.

I've updated the battleship section and partially updated the others. I'll continue during the week.

A fascinating prospect for us. Italy still had her dreadnoughts, Yavuz was still extant, and the US has several in reserve.

Are there any references for what the US planned for updates to Latorre if Chile had agreed to sell her in 1942? Given the information on other threads I know converting a British-build battleship to US standards would be a major effort, especially the electrics - DC to AC. This could go to another thread if it's not apropos to this discussion.

Are there any references for what the US planned for updates to Latorre if Chile had agreed to sell her in 1942? Given the information on other threads I know converting a British-build battleship to US standards would be a major effort, especially the electrics - DC to AC. This could go to another thread if it's not apropos to this discussion.
Many of the details observed by the chileans in the 1950s likely included: the need to overhaul the machinery, address structural fatigue issues, increase deck protection, and add an anti-aircraft battery.

Regarding the Chilean projects, because the modernization work would be carried out in Chile, not all of the above could be implemented immediately and comprehensively (for example, there was no way to install a 12-inch protected deck on the ship).
In 1951, the machinery accident likely led to plans for a major modification (lightening the ship), but for a combination of reasons (lack of funds, the tactical and strategic value of the unit, etc.), this did not move forward.
