This is all on the White House. This admin is filled with Dunning-Kruger specimens (Hegseth especially) & unfortunately military leadership can’t just ignore them.
 
I suppose other than E-2Ds the fallback is podded AEW. We know SAAB have an Erieye derived system they're developing with General Atomics for the MQ-9, but you could also stick it on the Global Hawks the AF is planning on retiring and get it another 10,000ft in ceiling and 7+ extra hours of endurance.
 
Enough space for radar/elctonic fit out, spare crew, loads of fuel for range/loiter time etc. Enough spare on top to stash the ego of generals and presidents in fact.
 
It won't look good for the AWACs when it has to operate 1000mi from the front line because the other side has supersonic-cruising stealth fighters with 200mi range missiles.
 
Well, RORsats are an established technology but is space-based AEW (SBAEW) a practical proposition rather than pastry in space?

Once upon a time over-land AEW&C was impractical but became practical in the mid-70s. Has SBAEW's time come?

They have incredibly limited amounts of propellant on board and every kind of maneuvering is to be avoided, because getting back where they're supposed to be will require propellant again. And how often could they dodge?

Can they avoid debris clouds? How often could they do this?

Space launch is costly and when all your satellites get shredded by ASAT missiles, other satellites and huge debris fields created in the wake of all of this (not even touching potentially just throwing a nuke at them). Satellites are incredibly fragile, super high priority targets. An aircraft can at least dynamically react to threats, can do so easily and can be protected by other aerial assets.

That whole topic was already discussed to death in the Golden Dome thread, which deals with the pinnacle of the satellite delusion pushed by the current crop of techbros like Elon Musk.
 
Is Pete Hogshead the witless fool who brought up the idea of cancelling the USAF's E-7 purchase or was it someone else?

I deeply, deeply doubt the idea originated with him. They didn't put him in his job because he develops innovative ideas, nurtures creativity, or is capable of critical thinking.

Don't need to schooled on satellites or anything spaceflight related. I know the capabilities of spacecraft, I have supported dozens of launch campaigns both military and civilian as both a service member and civilian. I supported the DOD post Challenger space launch recovery. Also, was involved with STAS, ALS and NLS.
