Hi! BMW high speed bpmber projectⅠ.

"The Schnellbomber (fast bomber) was a compromise between speed and range. It was powered by two BMW 018 jet engines mounted beneath the wings trailing edge, and two BMW 028 turboprop engines above the wings leading edge. All engines were to be used on takeoff and when bursts of speed were needed, otherwise it would cruise with the BMW 028 turboprops.

The mid-fuselage mounted wing had a small section of forward-sweep, while the outer wing panels were swept back. The landing gear consisted of three tandem wheels under the fuselage. One set of wheels was located beneath the cockpit and the other two were set close together near the mid-fuselage. In addition there was one landing gear to the outside of each engine nacelles.

A three man crew sat in a pressurized cockpit in the nose of the aircraft.

Defensive armament was two remote-control turrets with two cannon each, one on top and one on bottom, aimed by periscope from the cockpit. It could carry a bombload of 15000 kg."

Hi! BMW high speed bomber project Ⅱ.

"BMW used a 45 degree swept-forward wing and two BMW 028 turboprop engines for this design. The engines were mounted on arms so the turboprop units were above the fuselage so any prop turbulence was kept away from the control surfaces. The engine mounting arrangement also meant the tricycle landing gear could be kept short. The two man crew sat in the pressurized cockpit located in the fuselage nose. Defensive armament was two fixed cannons firing to the rear."

Projects still fascinating but which will remain on paper ... However, the booger that I am raises the following question : the work on the wing shapes seems obvious to delay the effects of air compressibility but one has the impression that the empennages did not benefit from this work ... unlike what will be done later on the Illiuchin Il-28 !

Hi!
https://alternathistory.ru/moskito-...rdirovshhika-bmw-schnellbomber-i-shnelbomber/

"In the late 1930s, Nazi Germany began developing the high-speed Schnellbomber bomber . The concept called for such aircraft to have the most powerful engines possible, enabling them to fly faster than the enemy's main fighters. This meant they would be able to outrun any enemy fighter.
The idea of such an aircraft found support from the Fuhrer of the German nation himself, and naturally, with such support, work began at full speed.

In 1940, development of the BMW-028 turboprop engine began specifically for this project. This power unit was expected to produce a phenomenal 7,900 horsepower. But even this engine's power proved insufficient for the German designers. They planned to pair it with the BMW-018 turbojet engine, producing 3,450 kg of thrust, for their new bomber. However, the jet engine was not intended to operate continuously; it was intended to be used only when rapid acceleration was required, for example, to evade enemy fighters.

The engine layout was quite unusual. The aircraft was to have only two nacelles, with turbojet engines installed in the front of the nacelles and liquid-propellant rocket engines?? in the rear. But that was far from the only innovation in this project.

The aircraft's wing was also supposed to be quite innovative; it was planned to make it swept-back to maintain high speed.

Also, to achieve high speeds, a decision was made to make the fuselage as aerodynamically streamlined as possible. For this purpose, no defensive armament was planned for the aircraft. Its primary defense was to be its speed.

The aircraft's landing gear was also expected to be quite unique. In addition to the traditional landing gear on the engine nacelles and in the forward fuselage, there were also wheel struts in the central section of the fuselage, which were intended to provide greater stability.

The aircraft was supposed to have phenomenal performance. Its speed was to be 850 km/h. It was also supposed to carry approximately 1.5 tons and have a rather modest range (fuel savings were planned).

Despite the project enjoying overwhelming support, not a single prototype was built. This was because no working engines were produced by the end of the war.

Of course, the Messerschmitt Me 410 Hornisse and Arado Ar 234 Blitz were built as part of this program . But these aircraft had different powertrains."
