Surely intended for US Marines only !
The coolest soldiers, the toughest force in the world,
reading newspapers, or eating an apple while being in the orbit ! ;D
(Not to offend members of the elite forces of other countries,
of course !)

Actually it comes from a presentation given in late 50's by General Medaris, chief of ABMA (US Army Ballistic Missile Agency). The great sponsor of Von Braun. Scott was looking at more info on this design in an ancient page of his site. Think must have something to do with the wild concepts (and not so wild, just visionary) the US Army thought about relating to the Pentomic Division-era imagined style of combat (non-linear battlefield etc).

Sure, because ours could easily done it without even oxygen supply en route)))

A pity that they never built any of Bono's SSTO or Inter Continental Ballastic Transports (ICBTs) and the Delta Clipper (DC-X) never went into production.

But the Marines were in the loop too... Someone says that the direct inspiration for Phil Bono to conceive the Ithacus came for what General Wallace Greene said to reporters in September 1963 when he was introduced to the press on his appointment to Commander in Chief of the Marines corps. Reporters even asked how the Marines would have boarded and traveled: seated or couched ? The Secretary of the Navy interjected: "Why, for so a brief journey, why not standing ?" ;D
