Well, the tanker version might of been flying already if Boeing hadn't screwed up.

The KC767J has entered service in the JSDAF last year. " Screw up" is also a very semantics laden term for complex corruption allegations, I'm afraid.
 
The problem is the KC-767A for Italian Air Force (AM), it was ordered on 2002 (as launcher customer) to be delivered on 2005 but now on 2009 we see only the picture from Boeing :mad:

This aircraft has become a mythological figure to the head office of AM ;D
 
The Northrop Grumman E-10 MC2A, a JSTARS upgrade canceled in early 2007, was based on a stretched Boeing 767 airframe.

Seems to have come quite some way since then: ASDF, U.S. made aircraft refueling pact (Daily Yomiuri Online [The Yomiuri Shimbun])
