Interesting find, Hesham, didn't know, that the Do 328 was intended as the basis
for a cryoplane. But with the take-over of the production rights of the Do 328 by
Avcraft in 2003, I think, this project has died.

What was Tupolev doing with Airbus in 1990? I thought at the time they were working on their own cryoplane project, the Tu-155... ???

Fairly obviously, there was no chance of selling the Tu-155 in the West. As noted in the article, it wasn't yet truly practical and required refinement.

The Tu-130/Tu-136 designations used by Tupolev ANTK can be a little confusing as they can represent:
· Tu-130 (1st use of designation) – Twin-engine conventional high-wing multirole aircraft from the 1990’s with two Klimov TV7-117 turboprops.

· Tu-136 (1st use of designation) –LNG fuel development of the Tu-130 (1st use of designation). Fuel carried above the rear fuselage and was also referred to as the Tu-130GAZ.

· C-PROP – Before the development of the Tu-130(2) and Tu-136(2), Tupolev developed the C-Prop a cryogenic cargo and passenger aircraft similar to the later designs but smaller and lighter (by about 50%). Power was from a pair of P&WC PT6A-67K turboprops.

· Tu-130 (2nd use of designation) – Twin boom cryogenic project. The aircraft had a distinctive tandem wing arrangement with the extended side pods holding the cryogenic fuel. Tupolev referred to this configuration as the ‘duo-plane’ arrangement. Was to be able to carry up to 5 tonnes of cargo or 53 passengers.

· Tu-136 (2nd use of designation) – In the late 1990’s Tupolev concentrated on ways to introduce LNG as a fuel. With a domestic feeder role envisaged, this Tu-136 could carry over 50 passengers with a range of about 2,000 km. Like the Tu-130(2) it featured the distinctive side pod arrangement. Nacelle or spine tanks are all you can get away with--put cryogens in wet wings, and they'd get cold soaked.

The moment you rotate the nose the wings would snap right off.

I rather like the Tu-136... I mocked it up in X-Plane and it was quite nice to fly. Interesting characteristics. I never got around to making the cockpit though! It is interesting to see the smaller C-Prop and its use of pusher-props and a low wing configuration!
