Updating this thread now with some of the information that came out of Seafuture 2025 on FREMM-EVO and related programs;

IEWS/C-UAS

One feature in particular that was shown off was the enhanced Integrated Electronic Warfare System (IEWS) and new dedicated Counter-UAS system, and the work ELT Group (formerly Elettronica) is doing on that. Apparently a stand-alone modular version has been developed and has already been operationally deployed on a FREMM in service with the Marina Militare. I assume this is a reference to ADRIAN (Anti-Drone Interception Acquisition Neutralization)?
The system in intended to integrate into the existing IEWS, but with the additional of specific X-band radar systems for detection of UAS and then engagement by a jamming system specializing in GNSS jamming/spoofing (and apparently some kind of cyber attack). 'AI' algorithms are included to enhance the speed at which UAS are classified and identified. The system also maintains the ability to operate in a standalone capacity.

ELT has also developed a new generation of what are now conformal, fixed-face electronic attack arrays to succeed those deployed on ships like the PPA and FREMM 'Enhanced'. Apparently there is also a zenithal jammer that would be used specifically to counter high-diving and ballistic anti-ship missiles, as well as interfere with synthetical aperture radar on ISR satellites.

UMS

Additionally, there is also the UMS (Unmanned Management System), which is designed to provide a full-spectrum UxV mission planning and management system, built around a plug-and-play architecture to be easily integrated with new unmanned platforms (as always, we shall see how plug-in-play is actually is when it is delivered). The system is currently in critical design review and is intended to debut on the FREMM-EVO, but will also be rolled out to other platforms and eventually become standard to Italian warships.

Though Italian USV trials are primarily focusing on Fincantieri's SAND, a new 11-meter, 9-tonne USV is under development that is designed to launch from the FREMM-EVO's two 12-meter boat bays (as an alternate payload to RHIBs). The USV has a 12.7mm RWS, but its primary 'armament' is really the reconfigurable deck space that can launch alternative payloads depending on mission (such as UUVs). The USV system is intended primarily to provide enhanced ISR capabilities as well as fill a wider role in ASW and C-UxV missions, but could also be used in an MCM capacity.

UAV capabilities require less modification, as these would be deployed from the helicopter deck aft, and the FREMM-IT already have an abundance of hangar space as they were designed to operate two helicopters (either two NH90 medium helicopters or an NH90 and an AW101 'heavy' helicopter).

RID 02/26 has a 16-page article by Michele Cosentino ("Marina Militare, programmi e futuro") on Marina Militare programs, and includes some updates on FREMM-EVO. I will include only news that is novel compared to prior reporting here.

For one, as reported elsewhere, the FREMM-EVO completed their Critical Design Review on 19 December 2025, complete with new renders:

RID reports that the second ship has been named Aviere, succeeding the Soldati-class frigate Aviere (F 583) before her and two prior destroyers of the Gleaves (1950s) and Soldati-class (1930s). The first ship has previously been assigned the name Bersagliere, previously carried also by a Soldati-class frigate and two destroyers of the Soldati (1930s) and Soldato (1900s) classes.

The propulsion system remains the same in most respects, but adopts more powerful diesel generators capable of generation 2.8 MW against the 2.1 MW of the earlier FREMM - thus raising their generated power less the gas turbine from 8.4 MW to 11.2 MW. They are also apparently moving away from the typical 440V power distribution to 690V/60Hz to cope with expanded requirements for power output - including growth room for directed energy weapons.

Before I say anything else - bear in mind that what goes on Fincantieri's website is their advertising, and is not necessarily reflective of anything the Marina Militare is procuring or intends to procure. For example, the PPA section shows off the configuration of the PPA EVO, which is not anything the Marina Militare has anything to do with or intends to procure. I suspect in this case this is more Fincantieri trying to market alternative VLS mixes depending on whether or not customers are or are not interested in deep strike cruise missiles.

With that said:

The baseline configuration in the FREMM-EVO contract for the Marina Militare includes two A50 modules and FFBNW two further modules, which could be A50 or A70.

There were contract options on studies for alternative fits. The one for fitting the ship with A70 modules and MdCN/NCM was activated on 5 November 2024 (during Euronaval 2024). This initiated the feasibility studies for the integration efforts.

We have not seen any firm news since then on where this effort has gone. But I think it is notable that the renders released at the time of their Critical Design Review shifted to showing all four Sylver modules installed, whereas previous renders and models only showed the two forward A50 modules. At least as far as reporting goes, RID did report in their 02/26 issue that the design was featuring 32 VLS cells, though it did not concretely state what the second pair would be (rather, they say "probably A70").

Correct. Or, more specifically, the entire module is 1.516m taller.

But with that said, this:

Is reading too far into it. The bow VLS space on the FREMM-IT are all sized to accommodate four strike length modules, i.e. you can fit 32x A70 if you really wanted to (not that there would be any point). On the twelve ships as built to date, they made use of some of this space to fit extra accommodations, which would need to be removed if the twelve completed ships were to be up-armed. In the FREMM-EVO, they left this space free (and re-arranged the berthing spaces to make up for the lost volume) and it has previously been explicitly stated as being able to take up to two strike length modules.

If anything, I would guess that the advertising material is just highlighting a potentially greater SAM load that may be more attractive to navies likely to buy the ship as escort - for whom these ships will be principle surface combatants rather than part of a multi-tiered DDG + FFG force structure (as almost every navy with such a force structure can design and build such ships for themselves). They may still want some deep strike capacity but not require as much, and as present versions of Sylver A70 are still single-purpose, navies would be reluctant to have too many on their ships. This VLS arrangement, for example, mimics those of the Greek FDI-HN hulls 2 through 4, which carry 3x A50 modules and 1x A70 modules for 24x Aster 30 Block 1 & 8x NCM/MdCN.

2 of these Portuguese ships are probably the hulls originally ordered for the MM, so i guess very similar to the Italian configuration, with 32 VLS cells.
For that price it would be a waiste to go for 16 VLS cells only… I wonder if they'll want some CAMM-ER in the new launcher developped for Sweden ? It should be ready or almost ready by then

According to our information, the Italian shipbuilder will first produce two FREMM EVO ships for the Italian Navy, followed by three for the Portuguese Navy. The first ship is already in production while the second one is expected to enter production imminently. Portugal will not get hulls currently in production for the Italian Navy.
The Portuguese frigates will be in the same baseline configuration as the Italian Navy FREMM EVO, except for communication systems. Regarding the anti-ship missiles, the decision is still pending between the Teseo Mk2/E by MBDA and the NSM by Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.

This marks the first instance where SAFE funds are used for the procurement of frigates. Romania recently used SAFE to procure some offshore patrol vessels from Rheinmetall. The SAFE (Security Action for Europe) instrument is a major European Union financial initiative designed to rapidly boost defense spending, increase joint weapons procurement, and strengthen the European Defence Technological and Industrial Base (EDTIB). Established in May 2025 as the flagship component of the European Commission’s ReArm Europe Plan / Readiness 2030 initiative, SAFE makes up to €150 billion available in long-maturity, low-interest loans to EU Member States

Indeed - this schedule was seconded by reporting from Analisi Difesa, though in both cases I would tend to assume Luca Peruzzi (who contributes to both AD and NN). They also noted that included in the €3.9bn was a technology transfer and maintenance package to support the units through their service life, which helps explain the increased cost versus the Italian program.

This is very clearly being predicated on Fincantieri's stated ambition of cutting production time on the FREMM down from the present average - 50 months - to 32 months:

If they are able to do so, then so long as they cut first steel on the first Portuguese ship by early 2027, they could deliver it in late 2029. But that is a very ambitious schedule.

Given the FREMM is a specialized platform (for ASW), I suspect it would be prioritized for builds at Riva Trigoso. Space on the construction slip there will be tight for the rest of the year, but come spring the two OPVs currently building (Caboto and Francese) will be launched, the 8th PPA will probably be moved outdoors, and the second FREMM-EVO (Aviere) should have already started assembly. Assuming the third ship (first Portuguese ship) has already started construction that year, she could also be moved to the outdoor slip in 2028 after Bersagliere (first EVO) launches (December 2027).

The ninth PPA, remaining PPX, and prototype MMPC would all have to be displaced elsewhere, but that should not actually be too hard. Muggiano has a build hall that tends to handle corvette-sized ships and also built two of the PPA, and Castellammare di Stabia will also be an option now that it will be dedicated fully to military construction, and probably will not have any more sections for logistical support ships to build until 2029 or later (bow module for the future MN BRF Gustave Zédé, and the third MMI LSS, rumored to be called Promoteo).

In terms of European offerings that could potentially be integrated? There is only Aquila, in terms of length. Whether it actually can or will be integrated is not clear, I have only seen firm indications of work going on in that regard for Mk.41, and a stated intent for A70NG.

Something isn't right with this picture... my bet is something got lost in the media reports and it's actually 1 FREMM-EVO for Portugal in 2030, with the other 2 following in 2031+.

No - as reported by NN and AD, the first two ships already on contract for the Italian Navy will still go to Italy. The subsequent hulls (FOS 3, 4 & 5) will go to Portugal.

Somehow, the first hull is supposed to be delivered in 2029, and the following two hulls in 2030. That schedule is extremely ambitious, and clearly predicated on the stated intention of cutting production time on the FREMM down from 50 to 32 months (ex, at such a pace a ship started in February 2027 would be delivered in October 2029, or a ship started in April 2028 would deliver in December 2030).

I am skeptical they will achieve that schedule, particularly for the first ship, but we will have to see. As I said in my prior post, I would tend to assume that every build other than FREMM-EVO is going to be displaced to other Fincantieri yards to allow Riva Trigoso to focus on these ships.

The FREMM-EVO currently under construction are not replacements for anything. They are two additions to bring the fleet to the desired size of 12 frigates. If any FREMM are sold to Greece following the MoU signed last year, then additional FREMM-EVO will be ordered to replace them (falling in queue behind the three Portuguese ships).

While I personally would not be surprised it these ships slip right of schedule and their delivery dates become as such, I do not think it is a case of dates being mixed up by the media reports.

As I mentioned before - the timelines align quite well when you place them alongside where Fincantieri claims they bring will bring FREMM production cadence. So I think they genuinely intend to deliver all three ships to Portugal from late 2029 to the end of 2030, pushing them through the yards once they have the infrastructure upgrades completed (which will shorten their build time).

Incredibly ambitious to say the least, but not impossible.

FWIW, I suspect you could get 24 Albatros NG cells for CAMM-ER in the space reserved for 16x A70, just looking at other ships (ex, think of the Type 45's), and 24x CAMM-ER + 16x Aster 30 B1NT is not terrible.

But, yeah, the lack of an actual universal VLS has been dogging the Marina Militare for ages. They weren't going to buy A70 cells for the FREMM and Horizon's without getting the go-ahead for deep strike missiles, because those cells couldn't launch Aster. And they weren't going to buy A50 VLS just to have to pull it out again later (particularly not with where the budget was when the FREMM were procured).

With the end result being that all the FREMM-IT were procured with only half their VLS, and those VLS were the tactical-length A50 (which are mounted in a space that is actually sized for strike-length).

With that said, if A70-NG is a larger diameter cell (to better accommodate Aquila or other future payloads), CAMM-ER quadpacks may be possible. We do know that multi-packs in A50 cells was studied for the MMI in the mid-2010s, indicating that a dual-pack would be possible. But if A70-NG is larger diameter - say, Mk.41-sized (63.8 x 63.8 cm, versus the 56 x 56 cm of Sylver A43/50/70), I wouldn't rule out that studies are restarted for quad-packs.

It's a new cold-launch system for 24 CAMM or CAMM-ER missiles, it has the same footprint as other Sylver launchers.

Potentially, but that would depend on the size of the missile they opt for. It is entirely possible that the project is conceived without a naval application.

As @Titus K said - it's not a triple pack, but rather a 24-cell module that fits in the same space as a Sylver module.

This concept did not exist at the time the Marina Militare was counting its AoA for FREMM-EVO's full armament, but it is certainly a notable capability to look at now. Personally I would consider a ship with three A50 modules and one 24-cell soft launch module to be quite a robust fit for a frigate not interested in deep strike roles. That would provide 24x CAMM-ER and 24x Aster 30 B1/B1NT for expanded air defense roles.

For Aster 15 EC - indeed, the primary beneficiaries are ships that operate with A43 cells, or that only utilize A50 cells and have no other options for short-range SAMs. It is already intended to be fitted to the Horizon/Orizzonte-class during their MLU's (which will run from 2026 to 2030, roughly, for all four ships), as well as Charles de Gaulle in an upcoming refit (not the present one, but one closer to the end of the decade). I suspect it will also at a minimum end up on Cavour (who will have an MLU near the end of the decade) and the MN's eight FREMM.

We will need a launcher for HYDIS/Aquila and possibly Stratus LO, i don't know for italy, but France definitely won't settle on Mk41.

Certainly, yes.

Though I think for evolving Sylver or a European solution there is a timing challenge - the Italians want to push ahead faster because they have vessels they want to arm with these capabilities in the near future (Aquila and Stratus for the DDX, Stratus or any other cruise missile capability for the FREMM), but for France, that urgency is absent. Existing MdCN-capable ships will just have their capability replaced by NCM Mk.2, and there is nothing on the horizon that will field Aquila in the Marine Nationale - it is a capability that will probably come to the AAE's SAMP/T sections first, and then the eventual Horizon successors only at the end of the 2030s.

For the long-term health of Sylver and European solutions, there is definitely a strong argument for the Marine Nationale and for Naval Group to take an interest in producing a universal launcher - but I don't know that they hold it as a high enough priority given all the other things that compete for attention and above all budget.

A Universal VLS capable of accepting both MK.41 and Sylver cannister while also allowing for hot and cold launch would be the best but of course this isn't without problems

A universal launcher is certainly needed, at least for most of MBDA's portfolio ie CAMM(-ER), Aster, Aquila, NCM, Stratus …
When you look at how little it cost South Korea to develop the new K-KLS II, it should be a bargain to develop a new Sylver variant.

No - as we discussed earlier in this thread, the first two hulls (FOC 1, FOS 2) will both be for the Marina Militare, and then the three follow-on ships (FOS 3-5) will be for the Portuguese Navy.

Fincantieri's claim in regards to their 2026-2030 industrial plan is that they will cut the current production time for a FREMM (50 months) by 18 months, to just 32 months (two years, eight months). That seems to how they're intended to deliver the ships to the Portuguese on such an aggressive schedule.

Ambition in size corresponds to ambition in capabilities. One of the important doubts that existed about this new model was the amount of anti-aircraft missiles it could carry. We are talking about the silos installed under the deck from where these weapons are fired. The original FREMMs only have 16 VLS.

In this case, each VLS corresponds to a missile. In the future, there may be the option of installing three or four missiles (for example, CAMM type) in a single cell, but, for now, the frigates will have "only" Aster 15, Aster 30 and Aster 30 B1NT missiles. These weapons have ranges of 30, 110 and 150 kilometers, respectively, and can be used against aircraft or missiles.

The Aster 30 B1NT is particularly important because it will give Portugal a capacity it never had: to defend itself from attacks with tactical ballistic missiles (with a range of about 1500 kilometers). This means that if the three ships are placed at different points on our coasts, they will be able to defend this type of threat much of the national territory, including the main cities and other strategic points, such as the port of Sines and the surrounding industrial zone, without forgetting the islands of the Azores and Madeira.

As @Titus K said - it's not a triple pack, but rather a 24-cell module that fits in the same space as a Sylver module.

This concept did not exist at the time the Marina Militare was counting its AoA for FREMM-EVO's full armament, but it is certainly a notable capability to look at now. Personally I would consider a ship with three A50 modules and one 24-cell soft launch module to be quite a robust fit for a frigate not interested in deep strike roles. That would provide 24x CAMM-ER and 24x Aster 30 B1/B1NT for expanded air defense roles.
Interestingly, 3x8 Sylver A50 & 1x24 Sylver CL for CAMM-ER is exactly what the Swedish FDIs will have, as confirmed by Guillaume Weisrock of Naval Group while being interviewed by Xavier Vavasseur for Naval News.

I can see that configuration being chosen by other customers.
