On the 9th, U.S. President Trump stated at a press conference that the United States is investigating the airstrike on an elementary school in Minab, southern Iran. At the same time, he once again tried to blame Iran, suggesting that Iran might also have "Tomahawk" cruise missiles.

On February 28, the area where the elementary school in Minab is located was hit by airstrikes from the United States and Israel. According to Iranian media, at least 165 people died in this elementary school, most of them girls. According to reports and analyses from U.S. media such as The New York Times and CNN, the characteristics of the munitions shown in the video of the Minab elementary school strike highly match those of U.S.-made Tomahawk cruise missiles. The reports further indicate that the U.S. military was the only combat force using this type of missile in this conflict. (Source: Xinhua News Agency | Edited by: Xi)

Britain is preparing to send an evacuation ship to the Middle East for a potential civilian rescue mission.

The RFA Lyme Bay, a landing ship of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, the civilian support wing of the Navy, has been placed on “heightened readiness” to sail to the eastern Mediterranean.

It is equipped to operate as an aviation platform and has medical facilities, making her “well suited for humanitarian and disaster relief missions”, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said.

A spokesman for the MoD said today: “As part of prudent planning, we have taken the decision to bring RFA Lyme Bay to heightened readiness as a precaution, should she be needed to assist in maritime tasks in the eastern Mediterranean.”

The UK has already announced plans to deploy HMS Dragon, a Type 45 destroyer, which is expected to leave this week for the Mediterranean.

Britain’s military response has come under heavy criticism and has been dwarfed by a large French naval deployment announced by Emmanuel Macron on Monday.

Starmer speaks to German and Italian leaders

Sir Keir Starmer spoke to his German and Italian counterparts on Monday night as the three leaders emphasised the need for “ongoing co-operation” on the war in Iran.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman confirmed Sir Keir joined a call with Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, and Giorgia Meloni, the Italian prime minister.

The spokesman said: “They agreed on the vital importance of freedom of navigation for vessels through these waters [the Strait of Hormuz]. They agreed to work closely together in the coming days in the face of Iranian threat.

“The leaders emphasised the need for ongoing co-operation in the face of the escalating situation and agreed to stay in close contact in the coming days.

“We continue to work closely with our allies in the region. Our priority remains de-escalation and a return to diplomacy. That’s the best way to protect families from higher energy bills.”
I am sorely tempted to laugh hysterically.

UK inflation risks rising above 5pc as conflict in the Middle East unleashes higher oil and gas prices around the world, a leading Wall Street bank has warned.

Morgan Stanley said price rises could cross this threshold if Iran keeps the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed for a month or longer, throttling the world’s energy supplies and hammering Britain’s economy.

As well as increasing prices at fuel pumps, households are also braced for higher energy bills.

Bruna Skarica, Morgan Stanley’s chief UK economist, said household energy bills could rise by around 20pc when the price cap is reset in July.

That would equate to an increase from April’s price cap level of £1,641 to an average annual cost in the region of £1,970.

Further increases could follow in October as European nations refill their gas storage facilities over the summer, keeping prices high, she warned.

Inflation had been expected to fall from 3pc to the Bank of England’s 2pc target in the coming months.

Surging back to 5pc would take inflation to its highest level since September 2023, when the UK was still battling spiralling energy bills caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The threat of higher inflation has already caused ructions in financial markets as traders predict the Bank of England will have to hold interest rates higher for longer.

The precise extent of the economic impact depends on how long energy supplies are disrupted, keeping oil and gas prices high.

“If sustained at these levels, activity would likely thus (at the very least) grind to a halt from the second half of 2026,” said Ms Skarica.

It's true that thus far we've kept this thread relatively clean. But I think allowing extensive commentary, even if superficially related will result in this thread getting really messy, really quickly.
You're commentarying right now. Beware your hubris.

Iranian minelayers are targeted.

Does anyone know by what method Iran is mining the waters?

Following confirmation that Thai-flagged container ship Mayuree Naree has been attacked, BBC Verify has learned details from maritime security firm Vanguard about all three vessels hit by unknown projectiles today.

A Japan-flagged container ship called One Majesty has been left with a 10cm (4in) hole after an attack about 29 miles (47km) north of the UAE’s port city of Ras Al Khaimah and is now heading for safe harbour.

The second vessel, a Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier called Star Gwyneth, has reported that its crew are all safe after a strike from an unknown source damaged the ship’s hull about 57 miles (92km) north of Dubai.

Vanguard also confirmed Mayuree Naree was about 12 miles (19km) north of Oman when it was struck, causing a fire on board.

Here’s a map of the approximate locations of the incidents, which BBC Verify made by matching details provided by both Vanguard and the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) security authority:

Map of the three attacks. Star Gwyneth and One Majesty are marked to the north-west of the Strait of Hormuz inside the Gulf between UAE and Iran. Mayuree Naree is marked to the north of Oman inside the strait.
