-Geran-2 50 to 80 grand, these Geran-2 versions of offer EW resistance
-R-60 missile 20 to 30 grand.
-range 2000-2,500kms.
-Kremlin states in 2025 that 3,700 Geran's are produced monthly.

Missile with Geran with low to costs together can be from 70 grand to 110 grand, at best let's just say 100 grand is needed for a geran-2 with warhead and missile. At best Russia spends 1 billion dollars for a 10,000 Geran-2 swarm launch to targeted air bases.

-would you use aircrafts with a max loadout of air to air missiles assuming canons won't be used at a close distance because of the R-60 missiles?
-Are there cheap air defense systems that that can deal with them at a lower cost of 100 grand per drone.

What is the lowest cost solution to effectively thwart 10,000 geran-2s with air to air missiles and warheads?

Are you talking about ten thousand drones in a wave? I think that's unlikely.

However, I think the lowest-cost solution for intercepting Geran-type drones is to use automated air defense systems to guide impact drones, intercepting Geran by ramming. Much like an unmanned version of the Lippisch P.13a/b.

It would be ideal if such an interceptor drone could be used for more than five impacts. This should not be too difficult to achieve, as the Geran-2's fuselage and wings are primarily made of composite materials and are not particularly sturdy.

17-24kms is the combat radius of the drones so I am assuming last line of defense for airbases where all the operators have to be at or spread out? Do all 10,000 operators need to share radar information to see where they need to send the interceptor drones?

some interceptor drone can target autonomously so it probably better to spread them out, basically same way you would spread anti helicopter mine

EW to jam their control links. Or ordnance to destroy their control centers.

Giant nets would be fun, but likely more suitable for action movies than reality

To defeat just 10,000? Over what period? How many targeted locations?

  • Jamming/EW/nav spoofing? Probably the best bet but assumes the drones are susceptible in the first place. Still requires a lot of expensive and difficult to produce and test EW systems.
  • AI guided AAA? Cheapest probably but engagement range is a problem and you better have deep magazines.

These Shahed/Geran things are a real problem. That whole "quantity has a quality of its own" thing really coming home to roost.

Honestly its exciting of how vast the cheapness is to produce and even have drones mixed with aircrafts in SEAD or DEAD operations.

Production can get cheaper https://t.me/zoka200/44178
The Moscow Laser Technology Center has begun mass production of innovative 3D printers.

The new equipment operates on the principle of laser melting of metal powder, producing products with exceptionally high density. These 3D printers can be used in a variety of industries, including mechanical engineering, instrument manufacturing, and aerospace.

'The new 3D printer allows us to fabricate parts from a wide range of alloys, achieving optimal characteristics for the resulting metal components. The flexible configuration of the industrial system can meet the needs of virtually any production facility,' said Alexander Grigoryants, CEO of the company, Doctor of Engineering Sciences, and Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation.
Improvements can also be 360-degree engagement for attached air-to-air missiles and an all-around rotating camera. It's convenient to have an air-to-air missile for engagement along with a warhead attached. XQ-58s at least have higher flight ceilings to avoid interceptor drones so I am wondering if those drones will hit bigger mass production then F-35s for operations as wingmen.

Those rows of printers might be of more use sending wave after wave of cheap bootleg toys overseas, the profits of which might fund--I don't know--real ships and planes later.

Nah....that'd never happen, right Sam Walton?

Geran-3s can have flight ceilings to avoid interceptor drones flight ceilings that Ronny suggested but the range would be limited to 960kms max and more costs because of higher speed engines. cost of turbo-engine with an air to air missile attached can be 170k-180k since 150k alone is stated to be Geran-3 costs. https://www1.ru/articles/2025/05/11...tila-bolee-15-tysiac-geranei-v-2025-godu.html

At best if a kamikaze drone with a range of 1,500kms (long ranges then most combat radius of military aircrafts) and an air to air missile attached with 360 degree engagement and a flight ceiling that is too high for interceptor drones can be produced for 100k-200k each warheads included, I think that would pretty much be the go to for any air force in the world to start production to do more of the work for the aircrafts

I'm not sure it is that unlikely. If the components and warhead can be built with a sufficient shelf life, and one can sustain a few thousand per month... ten years of peace-time could lead to having several hundred thousand drones in storage.

the whole point of drone attacks, is to overwhelm the local defense system, so if you have a 6 shot SAM, I send 7 drones, and take out your sam launcher. To secure your 200km border, you now need 2 x sam every say 5 km. I can still breach your border with 40 drones. Which of us is bankrupt first?
