Forum rules located here: https://www.secretprojects.co.uk/pages/rules/

In light of the increasing incidence of classified materials being posted on sites like War Thunder causing legal issues for site owners, I have added a section to the rules regarding posting classified and otherwise restricted materials on the forum.

Posting of Classified or Sensitive Information

  • Do not share classified or otherwise restricted content on the forum.
  • Do not solicit classified or otherwise restricted content from other members.
  • Do not link to classified or otherwise restricted content hosted elsewhere.
  • Members are expected to act within the bounds of relevant NDAs, privacy, security, and information laws. When in doubt, err on the side of caution.
  • In serious cases, forum administrators will cooperate with law enforcement and other legal authorities as required.
  • If you come across content that you believe may breach these rules, please report it (by the report button) to the moderation team for action.

You have a deputy administrator who works in the Russian aerospace industry. While the site tries to act like real world events and real world sides are irrelevant, they’re not.

We also have moderators working in Western industry and Air Forces. Fail to see any relevance to anything regarding the site.

Such is the state of the World these days that I'm doubting the value of even participating in discussions where somehow sensitive or actionable information could emerge, or open source information collated or innovated upon in such a way that will enable malicious intent. Yet leaving the information space scarcely seems like an option either (on general terms, hopefully not too much out of some subjective notion of self-worth here).

My impression is that over the last couple of decades at least, the emergence of sensitive and classified information in the public realm has in various cases been "active measures" (or "активные мероприятия") wherein whistleblowing, fora and other practices and institutions in established democracies have been misused as more or less plausible cover in causing damage to said societies via "leaks". As such rules about sensitive and classified information will not hinder determined actors but will at least increase awareness and hopefully make misuses more glaring and institutions, practices and fora more resilient and less likely to be co-opted in self-defeating practices and relationships.

Resorting to the philosophical, I guess one represents the "Western" interpretation of "Mizaru, Kikazaru and Iwazaru" while the other represents the "Buddhist" one. To be neutral and/or apolitical in the context of a functioning, human rights respecting democracy (a choice and a luxury, even) is not at all the same as acting as such in the human World at large (more often than not a more coerced state).

I'm generally supportive of not concentrating on what are deemed as externalities to the forum (at least in the raison d'être sections that are not designated as more generalist, e.g. "The Bar" as I understand it). Where things such as genocide, human rights violations and totalitarianism are undeniably, inextricably part of the context, allowing for factually recognizing these as extant, intentional and net negative phenomena would likely allow them to impinge less on this (or any) forum than enforcing a local semblance of indifference or ignorance.

But maybe I'm reading the pachyderm in the "foroom" wrong. I empathize with @Bruno Anthony 's frustration on a general level (as far as I can discern it) and just how (at this point quite long) arcs of history themselves can bear on our endeavors, running fora and all. The forum's "HR policy" as it stands isn't determinative of (though it is a factor in) my situational awareness here as the site is open to the World regardless as to where the administrators hail from.

I still don't really understand what Bruno Anthony's point was to be honest. He quoted some rules relating to not posting classified material and then mentioned that one of the moderators is Russian. Still don't understand the inference. Moderators have the same access to posts as other people do.

People will at times release interesting information without realising that is what they are doing
- because they know stuff that the people who classify information haven't seen, so the classifiers cannot be expected to put a lid on that stuff
- because of occasional lapses of judgement

There are some extremely knowledgeable visitors on this site, a resource that can be mined with zero risk. Returns may be rare, probably will be very rare indeed, but don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

OSINT about what? Cold War era frigate projects and 1920s experimental biplanes?
That's far from all we discuss here, and some of us have first-hand knowledge of recent or ongoing projects or operations. You just need to look at the Texeira case to realise how stupid people can get, despite all the warnings.

I agree, but it's a cause for being personally paranoid, not for promoting mass paranoia.

As in many groups.
There are 1/3 that get it. 1/3 that aren’t sure. 1/3 trying to keep the 1/3 that aren’t sure from interacting with those that do.

Anyone from the West read the news from oh, I don’t know, the last 11 years? Now apply the 1/3 rule.

And 0,000...01 who is spreading his personal paranoia over others. Apparently being unable to comprehend the simple logic, that any real Russian/Chinese/Martian intelligence gatherer would not be claiming himself to be from Russia/China/Mars.

I wouldn't even say personally paranoid, just being aware of what information you have that is protected and shouldn't be repeated. It makes precisely no difference whatsoever that we're a mixed group of nationalities here.

You’d never betray a forum for the benefit of the Motherland!

He's implying that certain people are less trustworthy than others based on where they are from. That he's on an international (not American, not British) forum with a focus on military aviation and science seems to escape him.

Well, let's be frank; the most suspicious, over-the-top behavior there - the one that could be expected from low-ranking agent assigned to a menial job of gathering OSINT from public forums - is yours. So it's just logical to assume, that you are someone's spy, just rather inept and clumsy one (which, again, is perfectly possible to expect from very low-ranking operative, unlucky enough to being stuck with combing through the forums duty)

So - just to be clear - despite the name of the forum, nobody should be disclosing classified information here. The focus of the name is on once-secret projects that are now declassified.

So, don't leak any classified information, and this includes in private messages on the forum. Private messages are private from other users and me, but anyone with access to the database could in theory read users private messages.

In terms of the forum management structure, only I have access to the database. It is possible that the US Air Force or the CIA or whomever could get the NZ Police to seize my computers, or simply ask (with menace) to see someone's posts and private messages. Its also possible that the US Government could subpoena the hosting provider to get access in some way.

None of this really relates to the nationalities of forum moderators, who are simply users with the ability to edit and delete posts.

Definitely haven’t watched the news and is a particular 1/3.

Who would know what is classified or not? The rules said:
  • In serious cases, forum administrators will cooperate with law enforcement and other legal authorities as required.

You said private messages are hidden from everyone except someone with access to the database, then you said you alone have access to the database. Can you clarify?

You mention US authorities strong arming for access. Why would only US authorities be concerned about security breaches? Reminds me of Wikileaks where by some miracle only US docs were leaked and posted. A miracle!

In my opinion this database is too important to close, everyone benefits from it, getting information that is not available anywhere else and getting to know the opinions of other specialists or amateurs with new things to say. Secretprojects can only change for the better in these times of turmoil.

By the nature of all forum software, it is possible for anyone with server admin access and sufficient knowledge (e.g. me and only me) to read private messages on a forum. You can even buy a plugin to make it easy. I don't have any interest in doing so.

If this worries you, use an encrypted messaging service when messaging someone with something you want to be secret. If you want to share classified stuff, do it elsewhere. If you aren't serving military or working at a defence contractor, its very unlikely you are in a position to knowingly post classified materials.

I have received and acted on messages from commercial companies about copyrighted content posted which was not intended for public distribution e.g. restricted distribution briefings from Boeing, Leonardo, etc. They are legally required to ask me, and not responding to copyright claims of this sort would be very risky.

I live in New Zealand, one of the Five Eyes countries. It is conceivable that NZ Government entities might act on behalf of a fellow member concerned about a leak of classified information, or for another aligned Western country like Germany or Japan.

The idea that NZ would act on behalf of Russia or China is some kind of paranoid fantasy. The idea I would comply with an order from China or Russia sent to me via email or something is almost as farfetched.

I think this topic is done for now.
