Lots of chatter over the last few days about a newly revealed Chinese R&D project that may be moving ahead for a semi-submersible high speed arsenal ship.

As a concept I don't think that makes any sense. Very interested in semi-subs but that type of mast-only semi-sub seems the worst of both worlds. Hull engineering is very little short of a true submersible, safety is only marginally better than a true submersible and things like weapons launch are greatly complicated. And low detectibility only marginally improved.

Original paper as I understand is describing Chinese analog of (in)famous Columbia River SEALS semi-submerged stealth boats ('Alligators') while giant arsenal ships are nothing more than fanart developing an idea.

This likely ties with SCS island disputes. Basically an SF craft.

The I-SILC has conventional cylindrical dry compartments inside because the hull fully submerges. The illustration has flat sided wet-dry dividers like alligator (which does not fully submerge).

Has someone missed this?

LOL.

Speed is limited to ~10 knots, maybe 14 or 15 top end while awash. 20knots, if you're willing to suffer 5knot submerged speeds.

Has all the disadvantages of a submarine's low speeds and limited internal access, limited firepower outlets, limited total firepower... I could keep going.

Not sure why one would copy an adversary rather than take one of many concept off the shelf of your own. Carderock concepts have been literally stacking up for decades.

Operating periods awash or even submerged, but primarily traveling as high speed catamaran, could appear as concept being contemplating for at least a half century.

Most likely it's merely a prototype for large-scale testing, not a production unit. One thing that makes Chinese very cool - they build & test a lot of prototypes. So even if project got cancelled eventually, they obtain a lot of precious data - which could then be used for other projects.

We do alot of prototypes/demonstrators too. The thing that makes the Chinese cool is that they actually commit to production with uninterrupted long term planning and discipline to control requirement creeps, unlike us because there's always a study half way through reserach that find some obscure scenario that compromise the weapon system. You can't lose a weapon system if you don't have any to lose.

If that is accurate, I doubt the submerged depth it can reach, based on the missile hatches and packing density looking more like those of a surface ship.

looks like 6x UAV hatches and 16x4= 64x missiles, plus 6x torpedo tubes.

I strongly doubt the torpedo tubes, there's just flat not enough space for a torpedo room. You need roughly 3x the length of the shutter doors for a torpedo room, 2x if those tubes are single-shot.
