It is a 707, the screenshots taken above are just poorly resized (look at how much the red star has been shortened compared to the pics below):


The dog-tooth visible in the leading edge and the JT3D engines, would suggest a 707-320B.

The 767 is from 1981.. A full two years after this movie..
I took another look a Douglas plane, and apparently there was a DC-8...
Which looks like this:



First commercial flight was in 1959.
The window layout is a close match.
The only thing I can't see are those intakes on the nose in the movie..
The noseshape is less pointy in the movie?

In one frame I saw something interesting:

I'm mystified by that statement, the layout isn't even remotely close to the DC-8's one.

It's a 707, not only that, but it's a TWA 707 and very likely to be a Cargojet TWA.

Notice the grey cheatline going diagonally, higher at the front of the aircraft, going lower towards the rear. The only aircraft sporting this detail were those of the TWA fleet with the Arrowhead livery (notice also the radome colors combination, the grey stripe on the forward part of the tail and presence of a tailcode):

TWA Cargojets appear to have also had a red stripe underneath a cargo opening, visually delimited by the second section of windows (that opening is clearly visible in the screenshots above).

That's an operator's serial number, not the national registration number or build number.

Ultra Seven I also doubt, unless there are some monster engines.

But IIRC the Sylphid and Super Sylph will fly pretty well (see J-20).
Maeve/Rafe don't have intakes big enough to feed their engines. Same airframe, difference is manned versus unmanned (well, and Maeve has the AI program from a Super Sylph inside it)
The Fern and Fern 2 are supposed to be supermaneuverable light fighters, the F-16 to the Sylphid's F-15. Not sure where the inlet is on the Fern 2.

I'd like to try an RC version of the Fern 2, but it'd need a full on flight control system developed for it.

Ikuto Yamashita was one of the mecha designers for Evangelion, Yukikaze, and the new Gundam series. He is known for the organic look in his designs. For Yukikaze, Yamashita designed the mecha to look on the verge of being unflyable, but still had some aerodynamic sense.

The Maeve has three sets of air intakes and an additional set when the engines go to “ram-air” mode.

Fun fact: Bandai/Gonzo studios didn’t publish a book of the Yukikaze designs when the anime series came out. Yamashita had to self-publish one called “Blue & Purple” (2008) and is considered a collectors item.

I tried to play AC3. I'd gotten so comfortable flying in the weeks in AC4 and 5 that I tried flying that low in AC3, and found out that there's not enough visual texture on the ground in AC3 to give a sense of distance above ground. At least when playing on PS2. We'll see what the 8bit unit does.

While the series is ostensibly based on 20,000 leagues under the Sea, the original outline was written by Hayao Miyazaki and directed by Hideaki Anno so it ends up a lot more Laputa: Castle in the Sky with elements from Neon Genesis Evangelion.

As a bonus for fans of Century 21 productions, Anno did manage to work in a Thunderbirds 2 launch sequence via a fever dream in one episode...
