Hi,

Akasa, meaning sky in Sanskrit, is the name of the company founded by Salatun, the former founder of LAPAN (Indonesian Institute of Aeronautics and Space), while Mitra refers to the company's openness to partnerships and investors.
As an initial project for Akasamitra, Suharto, already known as the designer of the LAPAN XT-400 project and the initiator of the LT-200 project, was asked by Salatun to design a low-tech, low-cost trainer aircraft. This trainer aircraft could also be sold to the general public as a sport aircraft to support national aerospace sports, reducing its dependence on government agencies such as the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI-AU).
In this design, Suharto again used the design of the LT-200 (Read: Failed Self-Sufficient Training Aircraft – LT-200 Skytrainer), and it was almost identical. The most striking difference was the combination of a straight wing shape and a slight dihedral mid-wing, intended to further improve flight stability.
An artist's impression by Suharto depicting the ST-220 as both an Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) trainer and anti-guerrilla aircraft.
This aircraft, designed by Suharto, was named the ST (Suharto Trainer)-220. The number 2 indicates the trainer design type, while the subsequent 2 represents the second trainer aircraft designed by Suharto. Featuring a side-by-side cockpit and fixed landing gear, the ST-220 was equipped with a 150 hp Avco Lycoming O-320 piston engine.
The ST-220's design was not particularly distinctive; it was very conventional and used readily available aluminum to reduce production costs. With a wingspan of 8.01 meters, the aircraft was estimated to have a maximum speed of 240 km/h or a cruising speed of 208 km/h (with 75% engine power). The empty weight of the ST-220 reaches 611 kg, which is classified as a light aircraft in the Cessna 152 class with a maximum takeoff weight (two pilots, fuel, and payload) of 840 kg.
