Guetlein Talks Golden Dome Priorities, Says Missile Interceptors are Feasible

Here’s the role that space-based interceptors will play in Golden Dome

Space-based interceptors (SBIs) are poised to become reality through Golden Dome for America, a once-in-a-generation missile defense initiative announced via executive order earlier this year. An innovative concept first developed as part of President Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), Golden Dome will field for the first time an integrated network of SBIs as part of an orbital system designed to defend against ballistic and hypersonic missiles.

OMG, they went there, check the acronym. :D
Less tortured than the Marvel version...

Though obviously we're seeing slipping education. The last missile defense shield the US designed was named for Zeus's impenetrable shield. I'm sure there's another deific shield name out there to use!

EXCLUSIVE: DoD envisions prize competition for boost-phase SBI prototypes

The plan is encapsulated in preliminary “lines of effort” (LOEs) provided to industry last month and obtained by Breaking Defense. The LOEs cover two types of prototype interceptors: endo-atmospheric, designed to shoot down incoming missiles before they leave the atmosphere, and exo-atmospheric, designed to hit them just after they pass over the notional line into space and achieve 120 kilometers (74.6 miles) in altitude.

Satellite radios sought for Golden Dome interceptor demo

The planned demonstration would use radio-frequency communications terminals to establish satellite-to-satellite links between a government-owned communications satellite and a mock space-based interceptor (SBI).

“The government believes that the best approach for a low size, weight, and power (SWaP) solution in support of Golden Dome space-based interceptor (SBI) risk reduction and notional comm requirements will fall within the L/S-band spectrum and use the Link-182 waveform,” the BAA stated.

What is the benefit of an Orbital Magazine?

Orbital Magazines host one or many interceptors, allowing thousands of SBIs to be staged in orbit, ready to combat large-scale missile attacks, avoiding the absentee problem and allowing for a diverse deployment strategy.

By centralizing key functionality to the Orbital Magazine, the SBIs themselves can be simplified — increasing performance while reducing costs and leading to increased success of a missile defense shield over America and our allies.

Another key milestone achieved for the European consortium for the Hypersonic Defence Interceptor System

After the first contractual milestone, the Solution Space Review successfully held on December 2024, the HYDIS Concept Phase related to the future interceptor concept aimed at counter-acting the current and emerging hypersonic threats, done alongside the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR - representing the Granting Authority on behalf of the European Commission and the Contracting Authority representing the Participating States), achieved another key milestone with the Initial Concept Review
With the Steering Committee held on October 24th 2025 at OCCAR offices in Montrouge, HYDIS Consortium, led by MBDA, marked a notable achievement along the path of the current Concept Phase, with the completion of the Initial Concepts Review (ICR).

The HYDIS Consortium worked successfully on the down-selection and assessment of the two most promising interceptor concepts, starting from the set of options brought forward from the Solution Space Review. Drawing on the Concept Robustness analysis completed in the first half of 2025, the HYDIS Team has delivered to the participating states DE, FR, IT and NL (*) a comprehensive technical data package. This package includes a detailed value analysis of candidate interceptor concepts, evaluated against the jointly agreed CONOPS and metrics. The project has since converged on a propulsive architecture for both the initial acceleration and mid-course phases and is now advancing investigations into Kill Vehicle designs.

Critical to the project’s success and the timely achievement of all planned milestones is the early and proactive engagement of the participating states during the Concept Phase. This has been facilitated through a series of workshops focused on discussing the information provided by the Nations, enabling a consistent and timely alignment on common user requirements. This process will be finalized in early 2026 during the Mission Definition Review.

With the ICR milestone achievement, the Project has now entered the third step of the Concept Phase to further mature and assess the interceptor design and allow the down-selection to one concept at the Final Concept Review in 2026. Such progress is the result of the successful cooperation of the 19 Partners of the HYDIS consortium that is pushing forward the technical elements necessary to get to the new interceptor solution.
