But the wooded mountain ranges now carry radar sites. A southern cattle ranch has been replaced with the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force’s Camp Yonaguni. Japan and its ally, the United States, hold joint military exercises here. Plans are underway to add a new missile unit and expand a small airport and port.
 
Sounds like they are deathly afraid that the necessary (and IMHO, unavoidable) investment on infrastructure will put pressure on their procurement funds, especially with regards as to their favoured programs.
 
The USAF basically discredited the concept of hardened aircraft shelters with the use of precision guided munitions in the first Gulf War. Most people forget that even the SDB I supposedly has the ability to penetrate a standard concrete HAS.

SDB is short-range though and having to put a munition through every roof is better than wiping out the entire squadron with a cluster warhead, or taking out 3 aircraft with shrapnel and debris.

Looking at that red "nine-dash" line and how close it´s drawn from other sovereign states with a clear disregard for any rule based handling of territorial waters makes me see red and hope that the US will give the Chinese a slap on the wrist ASAP. Just as it would be very helpful if Chinese vessels stopped dragging anchors across the sea floor in the Baltic cutting cables. FAFO should be applied here, no question.
 
The Defense Logistics Agency is looking to expand its maritime refueling capacity from the Philippines by contracting companies on the southern island of Mindanao to supply up to 42 million gallons of fuel a year, according to new documents.

A solicitation put out by the combat support agency, which is responsible for sustaining U.S. military operations across the globe, is examining the Davao Region in Mindanao for contractor-owned and operated facilities and services that could receive, store and ship naval distillate grade F76 and aviation grade JP5. Considered locations encompass the western coast of the Davao Gulf, including Davao City, Davao del Sur and Malalag Bay.
