Hi, I think that may date back to the Focus Mission Ship concept days, which I think was more or less meant to serve as a concept design demonstrator to the Littoral Combat Ship program.

Focused Mission High-Speed Ship, but yep, it's for the requirement that morphed into LCS. So there would be some modular systems space that would hold some mix of sensors and weapons.

The baseline armament also includes 4 CROWS remote weapon stations with .50-cal MGs. You can see them in the line drawings, two at the aft edge of the flight deck and two on the main deck just forward of the CIWS.
