Interesting sonic weapon used on Belgrade crowd.

Probably trying to make people think drones or cruise missiles are coming in.

Exactly, much more disgusting than batton rounds etc, perhaps we should be told?

Balance is difficult tbh, folk have a right to 'protest' but law and order are enshrined in our national boundries.

Directional speakers for use in overcrowded locales can be good but are difficult to focus for entertainment so unlikely to see those any time soon, unless you like to hear your music etc with your head rigidly in one place.

What is the answer to a crowd spurre on by agitating 'actors' on behalf of a nefarious bunch like the Kremlin folk?

Lots of choice out the but, which does least harm to your electorate?

My medical knowledge is that these 'sonic' control measures have an effect alike very severe vertigo, disorientation, nausea, headchae/migraine accompanied by visual disturbance.

Rubber bullets can kill more easily, imho, of course.

I think they are protesting against corruption in construction that directly led to 15 death at a train station.
Hardly an usual theme from Russia actors.

And your medical knowledge is off by a decade regarding sonic weapons induced health impact.

1. Are we absolutely sure this is a sonic weapon and not some form of microwave? Like a miniaturized ADS?
Due to the dangers of invisible radiation, particularly its accidental activation and being unaware it's on, I imagine a practical implementation of an ADS-like system would have either strong visual or auditory cues. Like adding odor to dangerous odorless gases.

2. People moved like they instantly noticed something but I didn't see people covering their ears.

3. Sound waves are not that directional. They disperse very quickly. Yet I could mostly hear people screaming/shouting, while the sound was weak and of fair quality (strong sound might have led to compressed audio recording in those videos).

The Belgrade protests are directed mainly at a decade of corruption.
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cx2g8v32q30oThe current protests kicked off after the collapse of the recently renovated Novi Sad railway station, with 15 dead. The regime of president Vučić, in office since 2017, is held responsible by protesters for years of corruption.

I am not sure about any Kremlin involvement in the ongoing mass protests, the attitude of Vučić to Russia is ambiguous.

My thoughts exactly. Look up "Active Denial System" and I think you'll find the answer there.

Outside of a small cone, these things are inaudible. Effects would be of confusion, disorientation, nausea and a massive headache. Not much to do with hearing directly and being disoritented, covering ears would not happen as much as you think.

That's the LRAD, not ADS, quite widely used by police agencies around the world, as well as vessels going through Cape of Horn

Whaling ships have these shriekers that sound like what some women have in their purses to use against attackers—just louder.

I remember rumors of something called an “ellipton” but that may be mythical.

The most effective is basically a time-delay loudspeaker—where the protester hears his own words with a lag of a couple of seconds—as in post #11 above.

This tragedy was far more embarrassing. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_International_University_pedestrian_bridge_collapse

The Novi Sad canopy collapse occurred because of a poorly engineered and time expired concrete cantilever design. Basically, I'm not sure how you renovate such a peculiar reinforced concrete structure. Demolition was probably a better option than restoration. The original Tito era design fulfilled its design life but wasn't worthy of historical preservation.

The Florida tragedy was more inexcusable. The decision makers approved what was the longest ever post-stressed concrete span for a pedestrian bridge. When you're setting a record for such a mundane structure as a pedestrian bridge, you know the project has gone badly awry.

How hard would it be to set up a reflector in response to these? Direct it back at the operating side? On could hardly be charged with just putting up a placard panel with the appropriate properties.

Cardboard is a rather poor sound reflector.

Now, if it was one of those microwave ADS units firing, gluing a sheet of aluminum foil over your cardboard sign would work. Might even work to glue the aluminum foil to the back of the cardboard.

Impossible to answer without knowing at least the basic operation principle.

You could try a tin foil helmet. I've heard they work.

if you want to block certain spectrums/energy of a sound weapon you need to used polycarbonate the size of how much of your body you want to protect.

there are a lot of you tube videos on how to defeat DEW that are based on sound.

this is a two parter on how to easily defeat sound and micrtowave based 'crowed control'
