Seems to me if the Ukrainians - or anybody - wanted to bleed the Russian military dry of resources, they'd leave the Kuznetsov alone. If I am not mistaken-there are things called welding blankets. Birmingham-Minn. Tank became Superock Block-which had a sauna like kiln initially made of foam panels with thin metal to either side-meaning the foam could burn within with water shed off the sides. The heavy overhead crane framing kept what remained up after a worker forgot his spark catching blanket. This was likely similar. In the current situation, they might convert an oil tanker to a flattop...So what happens now with Russia and Aircraft Carriers in particular after Kuznetsov is scrapped? The Kuznetsov has been plagued by fault after faul. Will Russia build another carrier? I suppose it is only a matter of time.

Steam boilers are a cheap and effective means of ship power. But they require high-quality preparation of fresh water.I think the typical black smoke was a result of not using the turbocharging system because of failing turbochargers. Maybe they ran it on bunker C?
This was a topic in Ukraine defense discussion circles not that long ago. Long story short, they're happy to let Russia keep building them for now. For one, they're soaking up resources which otherwise might go for the war. For two, in the event of an especially large collapse in the Russian position, they might end up the flagships of Ukraine's Navy. Worst case scenario, they feel confident they could sink 'em when they're launched, which would be a worse outcome for Russia than damaging them in the dock.They are currently "building" two LHDs based on their experience with the joint France-Russia project of a few years ago.
Both were laid down on 20 July 2020... at the Zaliv Shipyard in Crimea!
On 20 June 2024, it was reported that Ivan Rogov will be ready for factory and sea trials by the end of 2027, and should be delivered to the Russian Navy in Q3 2028.
Mitrofan Moskalenko is supposed to follow in 2029.

The ship used (or at least it was intended) turbocharged steam boilers. Despite it is not totally crazy from a thermodynamic standpoint, it doesnt make sense in commercial power generation. Steam boilers are not the most efficient use of fuel, but they can burn stuff which is not suitabel for engines (coal, wood sludge...) Or turbines (e.g. bunker oil C). I believe this system was quite unique and never fullu developed to reliable operation. With higher quality marine oils, a conventiinal GUD system would surly be more efficient, so I dont understand the whole idea behind it.

Then why is every large museum ship floating and not in dry berth.This is untrue for steel hulls, assuming dock and blocks are stable. It's true for wooden hulls, but steel doesn't work that way. Urban myth that I think derives from a few widely followed folks who don't actually know what they're talking about. Strength for docking is certainly an issue, but if the ship had the strength to dock, there's no inherent structural reason she can't stay indefinitely.
