Radioplane KD2R-5 ASW Drone

Greetings All -

I have been scanning a fairly large collection of Radioplane/Northrop Ventura photos, documents and drawings of various drones. The KD2R-5 was initially developed and produced as a out of eye sight version of the KD2R-4 line of sight drone. With the failure of the DASH program of ASW rotary wing drones, Radioplane pitched the idea of providing a modified drone that could carry the Mk48 torpedo or two sonobouys, hunter/killer style. In the end, the concept proved to be unworkable and the program dropped. Attached are two drawings of the KD2R-5 - the 3 view shows the extended wing tips and the cross section gives an idea of the relative size of the drone and the torpedo.

The second diagram says Mk 43 torpedo, which makes a lot more sense than the heavyweight Mk 48.

I saw the post about the KD2 ASW drone with immense interest. Not too long ago I completed a QH50 restoration and during the course.of that restoration became aware of this varient of the KD2.

I wonder do you have any more of the drawings for this ASW bird. We may have a suitable doner KD2 we could use as a basis to reproduce it.

Nice on the QH-50 - AUVM is in the process of or may have just finished, their QH-50 restoration. Nice Chukar too - AUVM has a few on display as well.

If anyone has an interest in drones I would encourage them to look at AUVM website or arrange a visit. Red Smith amassed an incredible collection of aircraft, engines and other material.

Hi. The AUVM guys are friends of mine, they are located about 10 mins from our museum.
