A while ago I stumbled across a card model design for a Bristol Siddeley BS.1010 mach 7 hypersonic ramjet.

http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/665209-post89.html

It is an interesting design but I have been stumped trying to find anything about this particular project.

The only thing I have so far found is single artists drawing of the vehicle in flight in a biography for Robin Ralph Jamison ( RRJ ). RRJ had an interesting professional career and the biography has some details of his work with ramjets in the Bloodhound and Sea Dart programs.

I was hoping that within the collective knowledge and wisdom on here that someone may be able to point me to some additional information.

I did search here but found nothing.

cheers, Graham

Hi Graham
In the very early part of my career I was lucky enough to work with David Lane (Robin’s understudy). He was a thoroughly nice chap, a real expert, extremely well respected and a real inspiration. It was a very long time ago now, but I remember being told about their surface burning ramjet experiment. Looking at this design I reckon it’s related although my memory was that the aft surface were more faceted and angular. For a surface burning ramjet even an engine designer has to a inherently venture into airframe design. Bristol Siddeley, nee Rolls Royce Bristol, ran an advanced high speed propulsion group in the mid sixties to early seventies. One of its crowning achievements was a few seconds of running a surface burning (hydrogen ?) ramjet at close to hypersonic speeds. I understand this was a world first but was never made public at the time.

Thank you kindly for the information, most interesting.

Surface burning ramjet makes sense. Here is a link to the RRJ biobraphy:

page 19 of the pdf document has the artists image I referred to ( page 189 of the parent document )

below the artists image of the vehicle is a cross section diagram of the ramjet duct.

Since this was likely more a concept design rather than a physical vehicle I am not likely to find much more in the way of any drawings on the subject. Still there must be something in some book somewhere from which the designer of the that card model I referred to based his design.

cheers, Graham

British Secret Projects - Hypersonics, Ramjets and Missiles.

Chris
thank you Chris.

I have seen a few of Tony Butlers books but not this one. A quick online for a copy reveals that it is less common that his other books and currently commands a very high price - $100+. Too bad as it sounds like a book I would enjoy but not at that price.

Its available used on Amazon UK from £43.98, that's around $61. Don't know about postage though.

Through Amazon UK the first item available that is able to shipped to Canada is over 100 UKP plus shipping.

I can find a listing on amazon.ca but they are those same listings over 100 UKP.

And, searching abebooks.ca I find two listings both nearly $200.

Many of the Buttler titles are pretty reasonable in cost for new or used but for some reason British Secret Projects - Hypersonics, Ramjets and Missiles is rather expensive and elusive.

Cheaper than the £3500/copy it was on for a few years ago, much to the amusement of my colleagues.

Chris

To be clear, Chris Gibson (@CJGibson) wrote this book. Tony Buttler just edited it.

Bristol BS.1010 information is on page 156/7/8 about a page and a half of information including a 3 view and an artist's impression.

OK, thank you for the clarification Paul, I wasn't aware. My limited exposure to these books has me thinking only of Tony Buttler whenever I see references to them.

I now see the two names on the cover of this book.

Interestingly and inconsistently Amazon in it's simple way does mention Chris Gibson in the listing title but only Tony Buttler in "About the Auther" in it's listing for the this book.

cheers, Graham near Ottawa, Canada
