Specifically, cowl and radiator configuration for the Jumo 222 fitted to the Ju388 and He219B. While the He219 might be a really iffy one-of, though a whole family of versions was proposed, there were several Ju388 prototypes fitted and flown with Jumo222s.

If you can find a photo of it, William Green gives the He 219A-7/R6 (KZ + RZ) as the only prototype fitted with Jumo 222's. Smith and Kay give the same info, quoting a top speed 700 Km/h (435 mph).
Hope this provides a little help.

Cheers Bailey.

How many Ju-388s were tested with Jumo 222s?

There are a few mentions in the Quellenübersicht page for http://ju388.de/
http://www.physik.uni-wuerzburg.de/~vernalek/Quellen.html

One mentions of "propeller procurement" for "Ju-388 test platforms with Jumo 222 A/B" seems to suggest that test seven aircraft are specified. But a further mention says that the 9-8222s are to be installed in Ju-388 Nr. 7.

In another case, 6 Ju-388 Jumo 222 (9-8222 A/B) testbeds are to be built. Anyone know the number built for certain?

According to the Vernaleken and Handig book on the Ju388, while there were plans for a fair number of machines to test fly various Jumo222s, it seemed likely that only one machine was actually fitted with the engines, Ju388V9, the rest were either never completed to accept the engines or were re-refitted for other engines, destroyed before the engines could be fitted, or the engines were never delivered/flight cleared.

While looking for data on Jumo222 installations, I was just reminded that at last one Ju288 was fitted with a conventional spinner+radiator fitted to a Jumo222, rather than the hollow spinner version. Now if I can just find any clear photos of the units. The old Green WPotTR has a couple of shots, but they not very clear as published.

sagallacci: thanks for the Ju-388 clarification. I'd be interested in any images of the Ju-288 with conventional spinners.

Regarding the Jumo 222 installation on the Ta152, what do the experts think about the ventrally located exhaust ? Would it affect the undercarriage ?
What effect, if any would there be on a centre-line drop tank ?

cheers,
Robin.

When will we see another Luftwaffe publication from you, Dan?

My Heinkel He 162 book is supposed to be back from the printers today and I'm due to sign some copies on Monday. As mentioned elsewhere on the forum, I believe it clears up a lot of misconceptions about the type, using fully cited primary source evidence, and runs to 172 pages (including covers) for £12.99, which I don't think is too bad of a deal. It also includes several previously unpublished drawings and photographs, which is fairly unusual for an He 162 book these days.

When Tempest Books was set up at the beginning of 2019, the plan was for me to write (or at least prepare) nine books:
Eagles of the Luftwaffe Vol. 1: Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A, F and G
Cold War Interceptor (remake of RAF Secret Jets bookazine)
Spitfires Over Berlin (remake of the bookazine of the same name)
Secret Projects of the Luftwaffe Volume 1: Jet Fighters 1939-1945
Secret Projects of the Luftwaffe Volume 2: Bombers 1939-1945
Secret Projects of the Luftwaffe 1: Heinkel He 162
Secret Projects of the Luftwaffe 2: Blohm & Voss BV 155
Secret Projects of the Luftwaffe 3: Messerschmitt Me 262
Breaking the Luftwaffe: Ultra as a Weapon of the USAAF

A further book was added towards the end of last year:
Secret Projects of the Luftwaffe in Profile (bookazine remake)

I've completed six of these now, with four to go:
Secret Projects of the Luftwaffe Volume 2: Bombers 1939-1945
Secret Projects of the Luftwaffe 3: Messerschmitt Me 262
Breaking the Luftwaffe: Ultra as a Weapon of the USAAF
Secret Projects of the Luftwaffe in Profile (bookazine remake)

At present I'm working sporadically on Secret Projects of the Luftwaffe Volume 2: Bombers 1939-1945. There are vast amounts of new information to incorporate into this - it will not be a remake of my earlier Luftwaffe: Secret Bombers bookazine.
In addition, I had always planned to write a bookazine focusing exclusively on Focke-Wulf fighter projects and fighter development in general. This would clear up the history of the Ta 153, the Fw 190 D, Ta 152 and other piston engine projects as well as looking in much greater detail at the jets. However, it's probably a good job that I never got around to this because I keep discovering more and more Focke-Wulf fighter projects that are previously unknown (including some powered by the Jumo 222, just to keep this reply at least slightly on-topic)!

Great to know about the much improved book on bombers as well as the Focke-Wulf bookazine. Carry on the excellent research work.

Hi Dan, I just ordered this one (I'm excited for it to arrive!), by "remake" what do you mean exactly? Will it just be the same profiles, or will you add more in so it's worth getting even if someone has the first copy?
