Hi folks,
Up for grabs is a beautiful Topping YAT-28E desk model. This was North Americans light attack turboprop aircraft that did not advance past the prototype stage. One aircraft suffered a tail failure during testing and that ended the program. This is one of the rarer Topping models. These rarely come up and when they do they are usually in horrible shape.
This model is all original without any repairs breaks or touchups. There were two versions made by Topping, a short tail version and a tall tail version. This is the tall tail version. Model is 10.5 inches long with a 12" wingspan and sits on it's original stand. A must for and Topping collection.

The SHORT TAIL
The TALL TAIL
NAVY White/Dayglo Orange with NO hard points (my favorite)
ARMY Olive Drab with NO hard points.


I also had a blank Short and Tall Tail in-house version that were I think 1/32.

I believe (years ago) there was a female online here asking if anyone here knew any deep-details on the YAT's as her father worked on them at Cols. OH Rockwell in development. Does anyone recall her or know more on these - as my father was a lead 'wrench' on creating these 3 airframes while there, he is 93 yrs. old and still alive and I am finishing some thoughts for him. Thank you.

From North American Aircraft 1934-1999 Volume 2 by Kevin Thompson, Narkiewicz//Thompson 1999:

In an effort to improve the overall performance of the T-28 as a COIN aircraft, the USAF awarded a contract to NAA to modify two T-28A airframes with the installation of the 2450-horsepower Lycoming YT55L-9 turboprop engine in September 1962. The project, designated NA-284, was intended to improve the speed, over-the target loiter time and hot-climate performance of the T-28 through lessons learned in Vietnam. Originally given the Air Force designation RA-28 (Reconnaissance Attack), the project was later redesignated YAT-28E and nicknamed Turbo Trojan.
The entire nose section forward of the firewall was modified to accept the T55 turboprop engine. The result was a longer, more streamlined nose. A single exhaust port on the left side was positioned just ahead of the wing root. The propeller was an 11-foot 6-inch, four-blade Aero Products/Allison unit. The wing was strengthened to accept twelve underwing pylons (up to 6000 pounds capacity), and larger flaps were fitted. The horizontal stabilizers were enlarged, and aileron and rudder travel was increased. The YAT-28E carried 250 gallons of fuel internally, with provisions for two 110-gallon tanks on the wing pylons. Maximum take-off weight was now up to 15,530 pounds.
The YAT-28E first flew on February 15, 1963, with NAA test pilot George Hoskins at the controls. Early flights showed outstanding performance, with a top speed of 360 miles per hour and a range of 2760 miles. On March 27, 1963, during the 13th test flight, the horizontal tail failed in high-g maneuvers and the aircraft entered a flat spin and crashed, killing Hoskins.
Despite this tragedy, the Air Force was sufficiently impressed with its performance potential and ordered a third prototype. The second aircraft had a strengthened horizontal tail and an enlarged vertical stabilizer, and was fitted with North American LW-2C ejection seats, along with a reshaped canopy.
The third prototype was refined even further and closely resembled the proposed production configuration. Further Air Force evaluation revealed deficiencies, however, and with the advent of NAA's OV-10 Bronco, the USAF discontinued further YAT-28E testing in late 1964. The Navy evaluated the YAT-28E beginning in January 1966, but also found it inadequate for their needs and discontinued testing in May.
It should be noted that compared to the T-28A, the take-off gross weight of the YAT-28E had grown by a factor of 2.0, a king-sized achievement at least.

I would love to hear what he has to say. This project is one I find fascinating. Partly because the USN rejected it as a trainer for being too "hot", yet here we are with turboprop trainers having replaced jets in the intermediate trainer role. I'd say it's also a really good looking aircraft. The streamling of the nose for the turboprop made all the difference. Tell your father it's nice work.

This would also be a better platform overall for the COIN role, compared to Tucano and AT-6, since it has double the payload and longer range. PC-7s are roughly contemporary, and that family is still being built and flying, so there's no reason this couldn't be either.
