G'day Gents!
Once again I've been flicking through one of my favourite books “The Pentagon Paradox. The development of the F-18 Hornet” by James Perry Stevenson (ISBN 1557507759), Shrewsbury, 1993.
In this book it talks about the following program:
'Commander Ernie Waller USN’s theoretical Proposed Technical Approach (PTA) ‘Advanced Air Superiority Aircraft System’ - VFX(AS)………………………On Dec 10, 1969, General Dynamics submitted a proposal to study Waller’s ‘other fighter mission’………………..General Dynamics was awarded a $70.000 contract to study the alternative mission fighter……………….Commander Waller circulated his proposal just before he retired from the [U.S.] Navy in June 1970, but the lightweight VFX(AS) fighter never achived support within the [U.S.] Navy. In fact, George Spangenberg said the PTA should be burned. The General Dynamics (Convair) report said that for the 500-mile escort mission, Convair could develop a 26,000-pound aircraft with a flyaway cost of $2.1 million. The report emphasised that the avionics and armament subsystem weight (radar and missiles) would be the inhibiting factor in the design size and cost………… Within a little over a year General Dynamics (Fort Worth division) would submit a design that would weigh almost 10,000 pounds less…………..The airplane that Convair submitted to the Navy was remarkably similar to the YF-16 design that the Fort Worth division would submit a year latter, except the Convair’s design was a taildragger'
Does anyone have any pictures/drawings of this VFX(AS) design study. Or that of the General Dynamics (Convair) 26,000-pound design???
Regards
Pioneer
