Hi Gregory,

It is a real SF plane. It bears some resemblance to the Warrior Bug body from Star Ship Troopers film.

Do you have bigger copies from this files?. It is impossible to read the text.

Many hypersonic projects are really weird...whats the reason behind this highly exotic shapes. Any of the engineers visiting this forum can explain to us?. I understand that hypersonic aerodinamics are quite different from subsonics, then how can a pure hypersonic design be operated from a conventional passenger airport?

More examples of hypersonic civil designs:

1. BAC (Barnes Wallis) Universal. 1970
From Stuck on the drawing board. Richard Payne. Tempus. ISBN 0 7524 3172 2

2. Hypersonic preassure jet concept (Spanish Aerospace book for children). This aircraft is operated from conventional airports but how can fly at subsonic speeds without wings?.

The weirdest hypersonic aircraft I have seen in my life was sent by Chris Gibson to Scott Lowther's Aerospace Projects Review V3N5 issue. "The ultimate aircraft". Don't miss it!

Regards,

Antonio

It is reminiscent of the so-called " inward-turning scramjet" or "inward-turning forebody-inlet model" (although it seems lighter, without much space). In those designs, the front end directs air into an air-breathing engine.

Nasa has issued at least one RFP more recently:

http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewsr.html?pid=4300

Astrox Corporation has done a lot of work in this area. You can see their RBCC 2001 design in the "Space Animation" website:

Artist's impression of something weird sold on eBay. From what I've been teached of aerodynamics, it's a pure fantasy, but may be Orionblamblam would say 'Shazam'..almost a poem!

More italian names !
Here are two other hypersonic designs from 1960, made by Antonio Frerri. The
peculiar arrangement of the stabilizers (?)in the second picture looks somehow
similar.

Luigi Pellarini (I mistyped the name in the file names) was an Italian engineer that just after WW2 designed and built an aviocar, the Aerauto (for this look in the most recent issue of Aerofan). The design hadn't success (it flew well but no-one was interested in building it serially, and in Italy we had other problems back then...), so Pellarini went to Australia and restarted a career as a professor and designer of light aircrafts. Parallely he worked on some really weird designs, expecially based on multiple and staggered wings. He was a consultant for Lockheed, Boeing, NASA and MDD, during the X-30 program it seems (the man was very secretive). Some more verbose biographical notes on Luigi Pellarini can be found in the Sixth volume of the "Gente dell'Aria" series by Giorgio Evangelisti, but the essential is what's said... If someone has time and skills to try and do X-Plane models from these designs and "fly" them, let me know what happens... Stelio Frati, a really great designer (the SIAI SF-260 was his, to mention just one), was a close friend of Pellarini and thought remarkably well of his designs (don't know if of ALL his designs... ;) )
The projects come from some patents. Another one, the weirdest and least practicable IMHO (for one, it's okay to take -off from a powered sled, but what about touching-down ::) ??? ) follows. I have a 3-view of the second design, also, the one seen prospectically. And... Italians do it weirder ;D

Uh, Ferri was a real world-class GENIUS! Dean of the Brooklyn Polytechnic after the war, was the re-founder of the theory of supersonic flight. Before and during the war he worked as an aerodynamicist in Guidonia (the City of the Air, built by Mussolini in early '30s) at the supersonic wind tunnel and published his research in different academic and specialized journasl (one was the "Guidonia Act's"). He was one of the designer of the Re-2005R combined propulsion aircraft, too. When Theooore Von Karman read his works, he arranged (it was just after the war) to find out Ferri (he was hiding in the Appennine) and transfer it at once in the States: a sort of one-man Paperclip...

Nothing more...I even lost the link to the eBay lot. 100% is that seller does not know what he sells, it's just vintage print for him.

Hello, here is the other pair of figures from the Petry patent that help clarify the layout (and some confusion due to the weird perspective issues).

I notice some similarities with the Dragonfly SST from Jonny Quest, see https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/a3/17/74/a31774d32f48e6f7b6199aa31b704225.jpg, so I think chances are indeed that it is not based on a real project.

I found this patent about strange missile concept, designed
by Mr. William Hunter A. Boyd in 1954.

William Hunter A. Boyd of Kensington, MD, submitted a lot of patent applications on behalf of the US government (Department of the Navy and Department of the Army). Most of them seem to be 'ornamental design' patents for missiles. That makes it sound like the US military was trying to patent all feasible layouts for missiles to avoid having to pay industry for their patents.

As an example, attached are patent drawings from Des. 180,889 patented 03 Sept. 1957.

Very reminiscent of the Project Kingfisher studies and of the AUM-N-2 Petrel in particular.

Sorry if this is the wrong thread but they have filed patents.
