Interesting that they are calling it a "Type D design"... Is this a Grumman subtype designation, or is it related to a "Type D" competition that followed the known Types A, B and C? If so, never heard of it.

No, hesham. The Navy's "Type A", "Type B" and "Type C" programs were all originally destined to complement the Sea Control Ship program:
  • "Type A" was to be a V/STOL utility aircraft for ASW and AEW missions (the "Type A" mission was eventually fulfilled by the V-22 Osprey).
  • "Type B" was to be a V/STOL fighter / attack (the "Type B" mission will eventually be fulfilled by the V/STOL F-35B Lighting II).
  • "Type C" was to be a V/STOL LAMPS type not necessarily a helicopter (the "Type C" mission was eventually fulfilled by the SH-60F LAMPS III).
So far I have never heard of a "Type D" and haven't found anything to support any such thing, which leads me to think that this could be a Grumman-only designator.

Just a minor point of pedantry here, but SH-60F is not LAMPS III.  LAMPS III was the SH-60B, while SH-60F is a very different aircraft.  Aside from the obvious differences in sensors (the B used MAD, sonobouys, and radar; the F relied mainly on dipping sonar), they had a radical difference in operational concept.  LAMPS III uses HAWK LINK and passes sensor data back and forth to the mother ship; SH-60F had stand-alone data processing for its dipping sonar and had a different datalink that passed only processed contact data, not raw sensor data like HAWK LINK.[/list]

A couple of people have asked why this design failed.
I have no idea if ithe failure was technical or political.
However, looking at that first picture in the thread with the parachute inexplicably not getting sucked into the turbofan and air rescue being conductd next to the jet blast...
...well, I can imagine a scenario where someone looked at the concept art and decided that this was either unserious or the engineers were smoking crack.

Grumman put a lot of its own money into developing the 698, which was well on its way to becoming a real airplane. As the story goes, some Grumman executives and project managers witnessed the spectacularly polished performance of the Bell XV-15 at the 1981 Paris Air Show and subsequently recommended winding down the Model 698 program.

Not sure about this story's accuracy, but Bell Aerospace engineers like to think this is how it happened.
