What do we know about the HUD and other instrumentation on the YF-16 prototypes? Would it have differed all that much from the early production (A/B) versions? If any documentation has survived and made it to the internet, I'm yet to see it- I've searched here and on f16.net, but results are sparse. The same goes for photos of the HUD in operation, though images showing the general cockpit layout aren't difficult to find. The controls show some pretty comprehensive options for air-to-air and air-to-ground, but I can't see much to suggest modes dedicated to navigation as well as shooting.
More anecdotally: when I look at the thing, I can't help but wonder if this is representative of a time when the HUD was to be the F-16's only forward digital display, not unlike the MiG-23- or if it's just built that way because it's a prototype.
EDIT: Images from inline links attached for clarity

Thanks, that would make a lot of sense- the museum unit you linked also solves another mystery, namely the HUD seen in this conference paper and in the "Pilot Report" promotional video from General Dynamics in 1974. What then do you make of the different controls in the first photos I linked? Are those likely mockups, units with partial functionality, or would they be attributable to something slightly later, like the FSD aircraft?
