Don't know why I'm obsessed with this but does anyone know if it got a HUD. When I look at the diagrams I see optical sight unit but nothing relating to a Heads up Display.

From the top of my head, a lot of F-4 upgraded during the 90's have a HUD.
Look for Israeli, Greek, Turkish and German Phantom for example.

It shows you are paying attention. As a crowd. Multiple heads. Unless your name is Zaphod.

Hi Chris,

What's a 'Heads Up Display'?

Here's what the inventor Mike Crosley considers the relevant patent:

I found it interesting that it doesn't introduce a name for the invention, as the patent title is simply "Improvements in aeroplanes" :)

In Crosley's book "Up in Harm's Way", it's in Appendix 7, "Head-Up Display Patent".

Regards,

Henning (HoHun)

That's a patent for a head up display, not a heads up display.

Chris

No, there's no such thing as a 'heads up display' outside car showrooms. Don't encourage it.

Like 'roll-out', it's an aviation term that has been picked up and used, in error, as bollockspeak by politicians and car salesmen*

Every time I hear 'roll-out' I see this (apologies to Damien for miss-using his photo)
