Ha! I remember seeing this model at Le Bourget in 1995 (?) and wondering what the heck it was...

Yes, I was just browsing that very thread a minute ago! So there is a problem with the "41" designation. First it was used for the Yak-36MP... and then reused for what became the Yak-141? Also, it is even more confusing because the "141" resembles the Yak-43 project, NOT the Yak-41!

What did the later developments look like? I remember reading that there was a redesign after Desert Storm with a new wing and aerodynamic refinements. Are there any pics of this?

Amazing video! Footage from the manufacturing and also from the crash, where the landing gear leg destroyed the fuel tank after hard landing.

I agree! Subtitles would have been even nicer, but you can't have everything. Great find!

The various Yak-41 projects (from the Russian AviaMaster, July 2003):

I realize there is no topic on this forum devoted to the amazing Yak-141, the model of which I photographed at Le Bourget in 1989 (though no-one at the time wished to answer my question as to what it was!), an aircraft which I was also fortunate to see in flight demonstration at exactly the same show two years later, in 1991.

If you have great pictures of that aircraft to share on this page, please do!

Paralay's picture emphasises how 'stumpy' the F-35B is. Wave drag is always a challenge for STOVL aircraft.

Paralay, do you have more infos on this propulsion system? Back part is no clear for me

That looks like a RALS - Remote Augmented Lift System. Basically fan air is piped forward to a burner when in V/STOl flight, with a valve diverting it through the tailpipe in forward flight.

See: http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,2117.msg18155.html#msg18155

The rear nozzle looks to me similar in concept to the US ADEN nozzle with deflector as seen here: https://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/19900008322.pdf

During the early days of the JAST effort, Lockheed (accompanied by US government officials from the JAST program office) visited the Yakovlev Design Bureau along with several other suppliers of aviation equipment (notably also the Zvezda K-36 ejection seat) to examine the Yakovlev technologies and designs.

Yakovlev was looking for money to keep its VTOL program alive, not having received any orders for a production version of the Yak-141. Lockheed provided a small amount of funding in return for obtaining performance data and limited design data on the Yak-141. US government personnel were allowed to examine the aircraft. However, the 3BSN design was already in place on the X-35 before these visits.

I was thinking of trying to track down the data package. I was wondering if anyone was knowledgeable about Lockheed’s database and someone with access or maybe someone with experience with the FOIA process could advise me who JAST would have been under. From what I understand Yak got permission from the Russian government to sell the data because they had no interest so it doesn’t SOUND classified but I could be wrong.

From Soviet VTOL aircraft. I’d recommend it to anyone interested in the subject.
