I have come across an article in the Belarus magazine AeroPlan No.12 about how the Yakovlev Yak-11 trainer was modified for "acting" in movies:
  • One aircraft was modified to single pilot configuration and presented simply as the "Yak-Fighter" in the movie Normandie-Niemen.
    Interestingly there never was a radial-engine Yak-1 or Yak-3.

  • Another, more interesting modification consisted in a major fuselage reworking to pass the aircraft as a Polikarpov I-16.

  • Finally, a third Yak can be seen painted in Luftwaffe camouflage to pass off as a German type.

Yak-3U 1945 years
Thanks! So there was a radial engine version after all. Just went through my files and all I could find was this profile, though I'm sure I must have more in books and magazines on my shelves (I have a LOT of material to properly index).

Yak-1 M-82

The Yak-1 modernization project by installing a more powerful and high-altitude star-shaped air-cooled engine M-82 A.D. Shvetsov. The installation of a new motor allowed us to expect an increase in maximum speed by 30-35 km / h; an increase in the altitude of the motor by 1000 m; a decrease in the climb time of 5000 m by 0.8-1.2 minutes; a decrease in the take-off length by about 10%.
The project was not implemented because the weight of the M-82 engine was 250 kg more than that of the M-105, and its installation would require significant changes in the design of the Yak-1, which was unacceptable in wartime conditions. It was developed in 1941
