"Terminator" dealt with that through the simple (but scientifically unjustifiable) plot device of having the time machine only able to send back living tissue. Of course, you'd think that since even the Joker could figure out to put ordnance within a living fat guy, Skynet would do the same, and send back *two* teminators... one Arnie-standard, the other being a flesh-wrapped walking ray gun. Or do it even simpler and send back Arnie and a cow they've jammed a pulse rifle into.

But as for Flash Gordon with an 1873 Colt .45...
