Time to go full speculative. So it is the story of the Etendard, Super-Mystère and Mirage extended families. Who decides to breed between them.

It all started in 1956. The SMB-2, Etendard IV-01 and Mirage III-01 which all flew that year found they had essentially the same engine in a similar "rump". They all ran on Atar 101G except the Etendard which had the non-afterburning 101G called 101E.

And so they hybrided - like tigers and lions, donkeys and horses, goats and sheeps.

Hybrids of Mirage and Etendards are known as ETRANGE or MIRANDA (ETRAGE and MIRANDARD, polished into better names).

Hybrids of Mirages and SMB-2 are SIMBAD, SIMBA and SAMBA. With such names they were sold to Middleast countries, Kenya and Brazil, obviously.

So whatif the Etendard IVM had a one night stand with a Mirage III, and the offspring was supersonic ?

Same for the next generation, with Super Etendard sleeping with a Mirage F1.

And then the grand old SMB-2 grew despaired not having children, so a Mirage III helped it, and the end result were tailed deltas not unlike MiG-21s.

Later the Mirage F1 did the same, but the SMB-2 found those wings a little short for its taste. But that what it took to hit Mach 2.

Then the Etendard IV too breeded with a Mirage III.

And then the pornfest extend to other fast jets such as the Tornado, and the Mirage 3000 was born.

If we start to combine aircraft types, why don't tries to mix MiRage and MiKoyan, SuPer Myster with SuKhoi?

My favorite is the Étrange (Etendard + Mirage F1 wing & engine). If that F1 wing was low mounted, the result would be a little Phantom-like.

Time to throw more birds into the fray. Currently joining: Vought Crusader and SEPECAT Jaguar. And Mirage IV.

Jaguar was initially, Breguet project number 1210, later they dropped the zero. Some numbers before was the 1170, which looked like a Jaguar on steroids and was a competitor to the Mirage IV, somewhat. And of course after the Vautours went away (1978) and Rafale stepped in (2002) Jaguar and Mirage IV were the lone twin jet combat aircraft in the AdA inventory. Both flew 10 hours+ long missions in the 80's, courtesy of having two engines rather than one like those pussy Mirages.

And thus at some point Jaguar and Mirage IV started a love affair to bring back the forgotten Breguet 1170...

Meanwhile the Mirage F1 and Crusader were having another, lurid love affair, together with the F1-M53 and Super Etendard.

The Mirage F1 felt it had an opportunity to start a naval aircraft carrier, so he went to the Crusader, Mirage 2000 and Super Etendard and complained
"My wings are too small
My undercarriage is too weak
My engine's not powerful enough"

Sighing, the other three agree to help. The 2000 provided a M53 and larger intakes along it. The Crusader handled a pair of wing. The S.E passed its nose wheel...

The Crusader found its wings were too large and its nose too small, so he went to the Mirages and asked for some surgery...

And now, ladies and gentlemen... time for some Mirage IV improvement. Nose, intakes, and exhaust surgery. Borrowing from the Mirage IIIE first, then from the 2000.
It starts from the clssic Mirage IVA. And then they added the "doppler" nose of a Mirage IIIE. But it needed more power, so another Mirage IV was modified with M53s. Next, the IIIE Cyrano II was obsolete, so they put a Mirage 2000 nose into it, and since all this played havoc with the refueling boom in the once radarless nose, they borrowed the one from the Mirage 2000.

Those reworked Mirage IV were found to be much cheaper than any Mirage 4000 in the strike role. And since France could not afford the luxury of a 4000 interceptor...

As discussed in this site devoted to the Mirage family, France could have had fabulous machines ... Because as Arthur C. Clark said, the truth is often stranger than fiction ... ;)
