"Air Force could recall up to 1,000 retired pilots after Trump order"

The Air Force could recall up to 1,000 retired pilots after President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at addressing what the Pentagon has described as an "acute shortage of pilots."

The order, which Trump signed Friday, amends an emergency declaration signed by George W. Bush after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.

Under current law, the Air Force is limited to recalling just 25 pilots. The order signed by Trump temporarily removes that cap for all branches of the military.

A Pentagon spokesman, Navy Cmdr. Gary Ross, said in a statement that the Air Force is currently "short approximately 1,500 pilots of its requirements."

"We anticipate that the Secretary of Defense will delegate the authority to the Secretary of the Air Force to recall up to 1,000 retired pilots for up to 3 years," Ross said. "The pilot supply shortage is a national level challenge that could have adverse effects on all aspects of both the government and commercial aviation sectors for years to come."

In August, Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson confirmed that the service was short 1,555 pilots of its requirements, including 1,211 fighter pilots.

At the time, Wilson announced the Air Force was increasing incentive pay to officers and enlisted crew members for the first time in 18 years. The service also expanded its aviation bonus program to apply to include pilots who were out of contract.

"Air Force: No Plans to Recall Retired Pilots to Fix Shortage"

WASHINGTON -- The Air Force says it doesn't plan on using new flexibility under an executive order signed by President Donald Trump to address a pilot shortage by recalling retired pilots.

Ann Stefanek, the chief of Air Force media operations, said Sunday the added power provided by Trump is appreciated but the service does not "currently intend to recall retired pilots."

Trump last Friday signed the order to address what the Pentagon says is a serious pilot shortage.

A Pentagon spokesman says the Air Force is currently short about 1,500 pilots, and had indicated that the secretary of defense would allow the secretary of the Air Force to recall up to 1,000 retired pilots for up to three years.

Under current law, the Air Force is limited to recalling 25 pilots.

USAF not recalling 1,000 pilots. Nuclear bombers not back on 24 hour alert.

What is with all these hyperbole headlines and then retractions?

I hope it's not a case of the left hand not knowing with the right hand is doing at the Pentagon.

I think it's the President making declarations that the Pentagon doesn't expect and then they're stuck holding the bag. It's been a trend with this administration.

Did Trump make the 1000 pilots and 24 hr. comment? Sources please.

Jeb.... Bush?

Shirley these retired folks would need to be retrained at ludicrous expense and time, in order to be of any value at all and this delay would itself make this reactivation pointless. Could they even be integrated into an active squadron or would they need to create new squadrons?

This is all starting to sound like the plot of the new Top Gun 2 movie, except for a different branch of the military.

This whole brouhaha is due to his executive order.

Which executive order specifically calls up 1000 pilots and 24hr nuke alert? The one I'm reading just gives them the ability, it doesn't force them to do anything at all.

Depends on how long they have been out and what they will be assigned to do. Flying cargo is much easier than air superiority missions. Put the older guys into c130s and c5s and move the younger transport pilots into the fighters.

Wasn't the US military an all volunteer force? This move will affect the popular image of the USAF. People will naturally think twice if they might not be able to quit the service during peace time without such a burden on their new projects.

There is already the N. guard flying embedded with active squadrons. Why do they need to pull the hairs of the souls already too much committed in their civil career, too old or not anymore interested?
Weird.

When you volunteer the first time, you KNOW for a fact that after your time is up that you CAN be called back up. Hence it is still a volunteer force... They/we/us volunteered for this possibility. Pilots and other specialists are very aware of this possibility.
