US weighs asking court to break up Google as it weighs remedies in the antitrust case
The U.S. Department of Justice is considering asking a federal judge to force Google to sell parts of its business in order to eliminate its online search monopoly
Bell telephone was hit with an anti-trust lawsuit in 1974 but didn’t really fight it like Google will. Bell settled but even with total cooperation the agreement wasn’t made until 1982 and the breakup occurred two years later in 1984. Google has more determination, better representation and internet search isn’t a static, stagnant monopoly like old “Ma Bell.” In 1974, you couldn’t own a telephone, only lease it from Bell. There was no question of a startup being able build up copper wire telephone system. They weren’t “start-ups” back in 1974, no venture capital, very few IPOs, just an economy made up mostly of pre-FDR, pre-Depression Era corporations. Capital formation was largely suppressed by the 70% income tax and there was remarkable little initiative in the business class. Today, there’s a lot more economic freedom and innovation.![]()
