Naval Air Systems Command picks Textron Aviation, for the next generation of Multi Engine Trainer with the King Air 260. 64 x airframes will start delivery next year

NAVY

Textron Aviation Inc., Wichita, Kansas, is awarded a $113,107,250 firm-fixed-price contract to provide for the production and delivery of 10 Multi-Engine Training System aircraft, initial spares, peculiar support equipment, instructor pilot training, and maintenance personnel training to provide intermediate and advanced training for accession into P-8, EP-3, KC-130, E-6, E-2, CMV-22 and MV-22 aircraft in support of the mission of Chief Naval Air Training for the Navy. Work will be performed in Wichita, Kansas (99%); and Corpus Christi, Texas (1%), and is expected to be completed in June 2024. Fiscal 2023 aircraft procurement (Navy) funds in the amount of $113,107,250 will be obligated at the time if award, none of which will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was competitively procured via an electronic request for proposal; one offer was received. The Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Maryland, is the contracting activity (N0001923 C0020).

Feels like T-44D was right there, but I guess it's easier to sell a new number even if it's just a modernized version of the same plane.

Beechcraft has sold more King Airs than all the other manufacturers in that class: light, twin-turbines. 1960s vintage King Airs can be purchased for song. The Royal Canadian Air Force has been using King Airs for multi-engine trainers for more than an decade and you can be sure that the RCAF did not pay retail for new King Airs.
 
Since Textron owns both Beechcraft and Cessna, there would not have been any competition for the King Air from Cessna. Even with their new Sky Courier or from any of the other Cessna products. I'm curious to see who were the other proposals from and with what aircraft. I can only imagine that most were light turbojet twins, such as the Phenom 100. Something similar to an Embraer CBA-123 would have been interesting.

And from my adventures at Farnborough Air Show 2024 this week was in the Textron chalet for V-280 Valor business and managed to get outside to see the T-54, so here are my photos below.
