US Navy carrier named to honour Doris Miller

They should name ships after US National and State Parks (i.e. Yellowstone, Yosemite, etc.).

Destroyer tenders used to be named that way (the Klondike, Shenandoah, and Yellowstone classes). A least one LPD-17 (USS Mesa Verde) also got a National Park name

PS: I wonder if this discussion wouldn't be better suited to the Designation Systems or Bar subforums.

Naming a carrier "yellowstone" might led to a very explosive debate (runs for cover) :p

I will say one thing. I admit as a Brit to not knowing the story of Doris Miller. I would not have done if the carrier had not been named after him and started the discussion here. Doris Miller and countless other combatants in wars deserve to be remembered.
And yes, I am grateful as an old white man to be reminded about the Black people who have contributed to our lives
