In late 1944 the Kreigsmarine planned further variants including "type XXI B" and "XXI C".

The type XXI B variation foresaw adding another six torpedo tubes to the bow, but aimed aft down the side of the sub, 3 per side.

In the type XXI C variation the number of torpedo tubes increase to 18 tubes (six to launch forward, twelve to launch aft, 6 per side). In both variations the Flack Guns were upgraded to 37mm and the maximum length of the boat was 83 meters long.

The Type XXI D was to be a pure cargo boat for communication with Japan.

A further variant was intended to be a nuclear powered version which of course relied upon nuclear developments which never reached fruition. This nuclear powered Type XXI concept became the forerunner and inspiration to Nautilus.

German 'nuclear powered Type XXI' myth was discussed here already http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,5617.msg45227.html#msg45227
