Based on the famous passenger aircraft Tu-124, the Tupolev Design Bureau
developed a project for a VTOL aircraft with RD-36-35 lift engines . The lift
engines were supposed to be placed in special wing nacelles, the tail and
nose sections of the fuselage.
The emergence of such an exotic project is the result of the craze in the 1960s
for the idea of creating passenger and military VTOL aircraft. However, the low
economic and flight performance of VTOL aircraft, combined with the enormous
risk of operation, ruled out the creation of large passenger and transport VTOL
aircraft.
