An interesting concept. However, as it points out, doing so much work on the original design would have had a prohibitive cost on the design's range/payload. Personally, re-engining I think would have been quite a good idea. More modern, more fuel-efficient turbofans would have ensured a better range/payload at minimal cost. Ditto with more modern, digital avionics. The RAAF did something similar with its F-111s when they rebuilt them - zero hours and digital avionics. It was a shame that in the end the fuel seal/deseal problem and the accompany Occ. Health and Safety considerations for the groundcrew tasked with their sealing/desealing forced their early retirement.
