Hi All.

Can the membership help please with a problem identifying some models. Sir George Cox's son has sent me the attached photos of some privately-made models. We are trying to identify what they all are.

No 1 is most likely the Tachikawa Ki-77 prototype, No. 2 either an Me 163 development or a Lippisch project, but nothing definite has been found, 3 could be a Nakajima Gekko development, 4 the Kawasaki Ki-45, but again it is not quite the same, 5 is the Heinkel He 343, 8 I feel has to be Lippisch or Messerschmitt, but not certain which, and 12 is most likely the MiG-5 prototype.

For 9, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15 - no ideas though they all look Japanese or Italian or Soviet.

Can anyone help please? Many thanks.

Very best wishes, Tony.

I think 2 is a DFS 194. I don't think 8 has anything to do with Lippisch or Messerschmitt. I'm pretty sure it's a Northrop N-1M.

14 looks like a Savoia-Marchetti and 15 like Fiat G.12 or G.212.

13 PZL Karas?, 7 Niemen? German jet looks like the He343

Edit, agree DFS194

8 looks like the Northrop N-1M; 9 looks like the Beechcraft XA-38; 13 maybe a BT-9 Yale

8 - N-1M seems correct, 9 is definitely the XA-38, 13 could be a BT-9, it's consistent with the model but its a less distinctive shape so it could be a lot of different things.

Look at the canopy frame. It's a (rather poor model of a) DFS 194 as I said in Reply #1. Called the Northrop design first too... ;)

By any chance could you furnish a better lit closeup of the twin engine twin tail with the large cannon?

Some additional info...

No.7 immediately struck me as being the Neman R-10/KhAI-5.

No.10 looks vaguely Yak-ish but the canopy is wrong. I like Justo's suggestion of the Renard, seems a good fit for the cockpit and radiator position.

No.13 looked a bit like the SAAB B17 but the wing details don't match. It's not the PZL P.23 Karas either, though its very reminiscent in overall shape and cowling shape. I don't think its the DAR.10 either, again the wing details (location of ailerons, layout of cockpit) don't match. I wondered about the ANBO VIII but it doesn't quite match that either. The Mitsubishi Ki-15 is similar but the cowling and rear fuselage don't match
The cowling looks like a Pegasus or Gnome Rhone to me, but the prominent oil cooler underneath and starboard external exhaust gives a distinctive look. The forward cockpit looks like it could be separate from the rear cockpit, the rear part faired into the rear fuselage.

The SAAB B-5 seems a reasonably good fit for No.13, not sure all the details 100% match the model but its closest match so far.

Number 6 is the XP-60E. Although it's quite similar to the -C, it has a different fin and rudder plus longer forward fuselage.

I disagree, the model had longer propeller hub for the contra-rotating propellers :D

I admit the subject of P-60 variants is confusing. Photos show that, just forward of the cockpit, they added about 10 inches (30cm) of length to the XP-60E, presumably to offset the removal of the heavy contraprop mechanism. The spinner looks almost exactly the same despite the removal of one row of props. I did a quick comparison between a drawing of the -C and a photo of the -E.
