Tips for scans and copyright

Hello everybody,

In the couple of months that I have been a member of this forum, I have since dug up some books which contain interesting photographs. I have read through the forum rules thoroughly. If we are to scan, do we contact the copyright holder? If so, how? Also, when we scan, we are to post the picture only, correct?
