I have a simple question. When precisely the IFF Mode 3 migrated from the initial 64 to 4096 codes dubbed Mode 3/A, which is also used by civil ATC? The APX-25, APX-37 and APX-44 supported only 64 Mode 3 codes. I am not sure if the APX-46 and APX-64 supported the same number or 4096, or whether only the APX-72 provided such a broad Mode 3/A functionality. All these were known as Mark XII transponders, though. Anyway, did the said migration take place in the late 1960s or later?
