Third "Gerald R. Ford"-class carrier to be named "U.S.S. Enterprise" (CVN-80)

Time to close this thread? Seems that is going just into confrontation.
 
True scautomoton, I too would have liked to have seen the Big E go to a museum somewhere but you are forgetting that it was a nuclear powered carrier unlike the Midway and Intrepid sadly.
 
Unlike the Fords its reactor is built into the ship I gather.

Still, one could make a cut before and behind--then back the pieces up against a dock where people on shore could walk to them--maybe see elevators work, etc.

Just a thought.

She deserves better than to wind up as rebar.
 
At least I got to go aboard her one last time in Nov/Dec 2012 and my AIMD hydro shop was still intact!

Didn't Enterprise have 8 reactors?
 
Dadgum---I knew Triton had two....the only American sub with dual reactors...

No way could The Big E be a museum ship, she really was hacked up. This was the USN's initial learning process on how to scrap a big nuke carrier, plus 65 had eight reactors. CVN-68 may go easier.

They also do not want random people having access to the innards of a "modern" carrier, even with the reactors gone.

When they sinkexed America, they did it in very deep water specifically so she would not be easily accessible for examination.

That's also why none of the modern carriers or subs are becoming museums. I suspect Midway will be the last CV museum ship.
