The Development of Ballistic Missiles in the United States Air Force, 1945-1960

Jacob Neufeld

1989

The advent of nuclear missiles following World War II revolutionized American foreign policy and military strategy. Neufeld's volume concentrates on the first generation of ballistic missiles —Atlas, Titan, and Thor. The author describes the formidable difficulties involved in the technological competition with the Soviets. With innovative leadership, the Air Force succeeded in overcoming interservice rivalries, budgetary constraints, administrative complications as well as major engineering problems. The development and acquisition of this series of very long-range strategic missiles set the stage for the contemporary U.S. nuclear arsenal, including the Minuteman and cruise missiles.
