Her captain, Yiannis Avranas, and some of the crew fled the ship without helping the passengers; they were later convicted of negligence. The ship's entertainers made a mayday transmission, launched lifeboats, and helped South African Marines land on the ship from naval helicopters. The entertainers' actions enabled the rescue of all 571 passengers and crew and attracted international headlines.

I remember seeing that on the six o'clock news when it happened. The most disgusting aspect of this disaster is that the captain and the rest of the crew abandoned the ship, taking all of the lifeboats, while leaving behind the passengers and stewards.

I found a video on YouTube dating from 2009 made by a dive team that visited the wreck of the MTS Oceanos in 2005, according to the comment on the video this was their second visit with the first taking place two years earlier.
