System 9-A-7660 Kinzhal - 9-S-7760 missile (Article 292) / AS-24 KILLJOY

Colleagues, for all how mention GPS or GLONASS. Please stop but stop mentioning GPS/GLONASS anymore.
The open source discussion of LIMA is that it uses the datalink built into the missile, and injects a false position far enough from the target that the autopilot commands a turn the airframe cannot survive.

That's the description.

Apparently the datalink signal either doesn't use one-time-pad or daily data encryption keys, or else Ukraine has acquired a source for the encryption somehow. And is able to use it same-day.

Could the jamming be destructive? like frying electronics inside the missile?

Apparently the datalink signal either doesn't use one-time-pad or daily data encryption keys, or else Ukraine has acquired a source for the encryption somehow. And is able to use it same-day.

It could easily be both cases, for one thing Ukraine's intelligence services have proved to be quite good at their job.

Could the jamming be destructive? like frying electronics inside the missile?
Possible, but 1) it would take a very high power emitter, and 2) I would expect the results of electronics frying to just result in the missile continuing down the ballistic path it was on, not tumbling out of control.

I would expect the results of electronics frying to just result in the missile continuing down the ballistic path it was on, not tumbling out of control.

But would its' warhead fuse still be armed or inactivated?

What? So how would it achieve any kind of accuracy on its target then?

As I wrote,we don't know much about the missile itself. If we suppose some details like the first guidance phase is inertial where some kind of flight path correction is possible.Than after that phase we have terminal or some kind of intermediate phase with additional corrections and than that real , terminal phase.During terminal phase ( active radar seeker is working) , the speed of dropping under 90° or close is so fast that there is no time for stabilizers to be used ( question is also what kind of power supply they use).About so called ISU ( inertial control system or guidance unit) there can be strapdown INS with laser gyroscopes and quartz accelerometers.

We must also keep in mind that Kinzhal ( in the case of this war) ,will always attack some valuable non- moving target so those corrections would not be needed as in the opposite case.

The open source discussion of LIMA is that it uses the datalink built into the missile, and injects a false position far enough from the target that the autopilot commands a turn the airframe cannot survive.

Again, they can only dream to jam something like ''Liana'' recce satellites or any kind of datalink channel between the launch aircraft or those orbital assets.

Attack from 16 May 2023 on PATRIOT ( PAC-2/3 ) battery stationed on Kiev's Zhuliany airport is very interesting. If I remember well from some videos made that night,it seems that radar AN/MPQ-53 (or 65) detected something as incoming. There is info that max target speed can be 5000km/h and don't know if that is right. 16 missiles were launched and there was several hits from Kinzhal's who destroyed almost complete battery.

Btw, there is one missile from the past which in my opinion is very similar to the Kinzhal ( or vice versa). It is Raduga Kh-15 ( Kh-15P). Kinzhal is much heavier, has twice the much speed ,greater launch ranges but ballistic trajectory, maybe inertial guidance is very similar.

''Ракета предназначалась для применения против стратегически важных стационарных наземных целей с заранее известными координатами.''

''The missile was intended for use against strategically important stationary ground targets with pre-determined coordinates.''

If it has a radar, it can definitely be jammed.

I think that's an optimistic statement; to assume any kind of datalink is unjammable is.

Evidently some kind of jamming is at work based on reports like these. Latvia is a hell of a long way off course, not as far off as Peru but still pretty far off.

If an external input like a data link exists, it is a potential cyberattack injection point. It's why the US doesn't have GPS receivers on any nuclear weapons.

Especially when some of the people who designed the system live in Ukraine.

Launchers aren't the radar or the control center.

If it has a radar, it can definitely be jammed.

There is very little or no chance to jamm something that falls on target 'under 90'.

Did you ever see the mentioned video anyway ? I suppose it exist no more. Some of the young people who watched and filmed than night were arrested later.

Just like Kinzhal ,it has nothing to do with the GPS.

Launchers aren't the radar or the control center.

If I remember well, five launcher vehicles and radar were hit and destroyed that night.

It's still a positional data input antenna.

Insert wrong positional data
or tell it that target position has changed and the kinzhal rips itself apart chasing the target.

And how to do that via cyberattack as you wrote ? Sitting by the computer and than insert some wrong data etc.. That's it ? In the movies only.

It was 16 May 2023. After Ukrainians announced on 4 May that they intercepted and shot down one Kinzhal quasi-ballistic missile over Kiev,Russians decided to use the real one against the target on the Kiev's Zhuliany international airport. Target was one PATRIOT battery.

Judging by this video ( one of many made that night) ,Ukrainians launched about 20 PAC-3 CRI missiles against incoming targets.Photos of that version can be also seen . In total ,almost 32 were launched.

Real source for the video was bmpd site : https://bmpd.livejournal.com/4700299.html

After so many interceptor missiles were launched, there was one ( or more I can not remember right now ) ''boom'' . Some sources mentioned three hits ,three 'booms' .

I tried to find more videos especially where we can see those hits by the Kinzhal via 'Donbaskiy Partizan' TG channel or other sources but couldn't find anything more.

''16 мая 2023 года в результате мощного ракетного удара, произведенного с помощью гиперзвуковой ракеты «Кинжал», в Киеве удалось поразить и уничтожить 5 пусковых установок и многофункциональную радиолокационную станцию ЗРК Patriot американского производства. Об этом сегодня сообщили в Министерстве обороны Российской Федерации.''

''On May 16, 2023, a powerful missile strike launched by a Kinzhal hypersonic missile in Kyiv succeeded in hitting and destroying five launchers and a multifunctional radar station of a US-made Patriot air defense system. This was reported today by the Russian Ministry of Defense.''

By having the right antennas and data format to update the weapon.

Effectively by having the whole datalink transmitter. Plus any needed encryption.

That's it. That's "all" it takes.

Yes and that's how Americans and Israelis jammed so many Iranian ballistic missiles.Just like Ukrainians did that to Kinzhal. In the reality as we could see, even about 30 PAC-3 CRI /MSE were launched ,Kinzhal struck its target and destroyed it. Imagination can do anything.

Bad faith (strawman) argument. Iranian ballistic missiles typically use intertial guidance only, which cannot be jammed. If Khinzal takes any kind of location update, target update or has a seeker, in principle it can be spoofed.

Kinzhal presumably has INS just as older Kh-15 did but very possible it is BINS or the strapdown INS.As we can see on the photos, there is some kind of 'panels' on the cone section of the missile itself. What kind of 'panels' ,there is no data. Receive antenna on the MiG-31K is for the 'Liana' orbital assets.

Kinzhal definitely has radar seeker inside the radome but the question is, when can be use that radar? For attacking something like moving aircraft carrier ,yes .For attacking deep underground bunker/storage like it was in Delyatin, PATRIOT positions on the Zhyuliany airport ,don't think so.

There is big difference between attacking something that is stationary target and some moving target.

We don't know if the radar seeker of the Kinzhal is only active or only passive or combined active-passive. Than, if Kinzhal is used against non-moving target ,why would that radar be used anyway? Than there is also a detail about passive-active self protection measures of the missile. What we know about that anyway ?

As far as I know, Kinzhal was used only several times from the very beginning of the war there against highly valuable targets like that deep underground storage in Delyatin, deep underground UkrAF Command centre in Vinitsa ,PATRIOT missile battery at Zhuliany airport near Kiev, some valuable targets in the Nikolaev and Kharkov area etc .. Of course we have not all info/data about possible combat usage of this missile at all.To write that 26 or more Kinzhal are intercepted, jammed, spoofed whatever, from the beginning of the 2026 is nothing but nonsense and propaganda.Ukrainians had so many problems to intercept and shot down even older Kh-22 with different flightpath and as much slower ballistic missile than Kinzhal.

At the end of the story ,where is the 'Tornado-S' rocket as part of the rocket artillery with GLONASS corrections ,rocket which are so slower than Kinzhal, predicted trajectory etc .Even that rocket is hard to intercept and shot down.Where is that ''Lima'' to jamm/spoof Tornado-S rockets ? Where is the 9M723 (-1) ballistic missile in this story. How many complex 'Iskander-M/M2' missiles they intercepted so far ? That missile is used much more than Kinzhal itself and of course slower than the Kinzhal again.

Something that fast, something that falls from the sky vertically ,under 90 ( literally), something that has so called 'faraday cage' phenomena maybe all the way throughout its flight ,it would be very hard to intercept, jamm, spoof etc.

Like I wrote, war propaganda is miracle just as Yugoslavians did that way during 1999, Iraqis during two wars 1991 /2003,just as Iranians did several weeks ago when they mentioned that several stealth fighters where shot down etc etc. I would not be surprised if one day the Ukrainians announce that they shot down even 'Oreshnik' IRBM.

Than, if Kinzhal is used against non-moving target ,why would that radar be used anyway?

Correcting errors that have accumulated in its' INS also for aim-point selection.

from the beginning of the 2026 is nothing but nonsense and propaganda.

And you're dismissing it as propaganda without any evidence to back that assertion.

shot down even older Kh-22 with different flightpath and as much slower ballistic missile than Kinzhal.

The AS-4 Kitchen is a cruise-missile not a ballistic missile, it flies a completely different profile.

This is something form the Paralay, I think. Of course, it doesn't necessarily mean that all of this is true and that this is how it happens in the real conditions of combat usage.

Judging by many videos, launch height and speed could be about 20km and 2500km/h max ( suppose). So MiG-31K first fly in the subsonic regime for about 8 min ,125km range, than in supersonic regime ,15 mins ,575 km range. After launch ( max launch distance is 1300km ?) ,Kinzhal can climb up to almost 250km ( classic ballistic or quasi-ballistic flight path ) and flight can lasts about 9 min.Radar seeker has search zone about 160km .Attack angle is 40 degrees but as we could see on some videos, missile drops from the sky vertically ,under 90 degrees.

Kinzhal attack.jpg

Correcting errors that have accumulated in its' INS also for aim-point selection.

Correction of the flight path is done during initial phase, not during terminal phase of guidance.

And you're dismissing it as propaganda without any evidence to back that assertion.

Sorry but there is no any real material evidence that they shot down ( jammed etc) , 26 Kinzhal from the beginning of 2026 as they announced. Nothing but war propaganda ,yes.

The AS-4 Kitchen is a cruise-missile not a ballistic missile, it flies a completely different profile.

Kh-22 'Burya' is not the real cruise missile at all even it has the wings and stabilizers. It is in fact supersonic missile which can fly in two given flight path profiles. It is described in this graphic. We can see that those flights path are rather ballistic than as of low flying subsonic cruise missiles. So called ''upper trajectory '' is very close/similar to the Kinzhal's trajectory .

Correction is done during the terminal phase, that is the whole point of having a RADAC seeker in the nose (The Pershing II used the same type of terminal seeker too).

The AS-4 is a cruise-missile, per wikipedia article on cruise-missiles:

A cruise missile is an unmanned self-propelled guided missile that sustains flight through aerodynamic lift for most of its flight path. Cruise missiles are designed to deliver a large payload over long distances with high precision. Modern cruise missiles are capable of traveling at high subsonic, supersonic, or hypersonic speeds, are self-navigating, and are able to fly on a non-ballistic, extremely low-altitude trajectory.[1]

Well if it doesn't use the radar to guide, it would need GPS (which can be jammed), unless it has an INS accurate to <10m over 1,000km, which would be expensive.

Dude, I think the other side is far heavier on the propaganda, even tripping themselves up in their own propaganda at times.

Not correction but the radar guidance/homing,semi-active,active,passive ,combined active-passive etc, whatever. That isn't correction of the missiles's flight path/trajectory.Again, Kinzhal will use its radar seeker during attack on the moving target ( aircraft carrier e.g.) but there is little chance for usage or no practical use of it during attack on non-moving target which location is known of course acting as the classic ballistic missile.

The AS-4 is a cruise-missile, per wikipedia article on cruise-missiles:

Yes ,some kind of supersonic 'winged' missile ( as Soviets/Russians used to say ) with Vmax 3.5M-4.5M propelled by the liquid fuel sustain rocket engine and with the wings which give aerodynamic stability during the cruise mode on the given altitude after engine stops its work .

http://www.airwar.ru/weapon/kr/x22.html

The point is that it is much easier to intercept something which fly straight w/o any or very little changes during flight/trajectory than something that is very fast, fly very high with changes in trajectory especially by the altitude.Yet,Ukr ADF had very little success against the incoming Kh-22.

Well if it doesn't use the radar to guide, it would need GPS (which can be jammed), unless it has an INS accurate to <10m over 1,000km, which would be expensive.

FG , ''Liana'' orbital assets ,not the GPS. Liana can not be jammed like GPS.

Dude, I think the other side is far heavier on the propaganda, even tripping themselves up in their own propaganda at times.

Don't think so. War propaganda is more needed by the side how loses the war to rise the moral e.g. That number of 59 Kinzhal which were shot down/jammed/spoofed whatever ,during 2025/2026 is nothing but war propaganda. I can bet that Russians even didn't launch so many Kinzhal missiles from the beginning of the war.

Based on what? Iskander production is at around 60-70/month, Kinzhals 10-15/month as an example.

https://cepa.org/article/swamped-the-math-of-ukraines-missile-crisis/
In June, Russia’s defense industry produced approximately 195 strategic missile units. Output included 60 to 70 Iskander-M ballistic missiles, 10 to 15 Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, and 60 to 63 Kh-101 cruise missiles.

No modern missile is that dumb. They all have INS system, which serve as basic for navigation; everything else just augment the INS. If the fake data is significantly different from INS data - outside of possible INS error range - any modern missile would just ignore it, concluding that sattelite data is wrong.

The open source discussion of LIMA is that it uses the datalink built into the missile, and injects a false position far enough from the target that the autopilot commands a turn the airframe cannot survive.
To put it simply, its impossible. Any modern auopilot would ignore the position change that fell outside the max possible INS error. Its inertial navigation first and foremost - exactly because it could NOT be decoyed or jammed - and all other methods are merely used to improve the INS accuracy. Data from sattelite navigation/terrain recognition is only accepted if it fell within INS tolernances. Seriously, its literally ABC of missile navigation since Tomahawk!

I would broadly agree with this, but even within typical INS tolerances for a 1,000km tactical missile, generating an error of 100m or more is perfectly possible.

100 meters - yes, possible, because its within INS error, and autopilot could "believe" in such mistake. But "telling the missile that its actually in Lima so it would broke apart trying to rapidly change course" - is pretty much impossible, since such data would clearly be much greater than possible INS error, and thus would be rejected by autopilot immediately.

Yes ,especially with that antenna system referred as EWS or electronic warfare system 'Lima' as we can see on the previous page where they showed the same ''bomb'' on two differ ( in fact the same) sequence. One as being KAB ( I don't think they used KAB-500/1500 whatever but only bombs with the UMPK and those UMPB) ,another as being the Kinzhal.

Based on what? Iskander production is at around 50-60/month, Kinzhals 10-15/month as an example.

Based on the fact that they announced only number, nothing else. E.g .26 Kinzhal from the beggining of this year, yes for sure and 58 during 2025/26 in total. Funny ,really funny. To announce that they shot down several pcs but several tens or more ,that is in fact 'game with numbers' and far from reality.

It was 10 March of 2018. Test launch of the real (combat) Kinzhal missile was conducted from the Bort No 93 red. On the other side, Bort No 91 red carried test version or maybe the IMM -imitation mass model of the missile itself. They took of from the Akhtubinsk air base. From the beginning of that year, MiG-31K crews conducted more than 250 test flights. I think that launch height was definitely above the so called Armstrong's line .

https://tvzvezda.ru/news/201803102038-umfp.htm

Several years ago another test lanch was conducted, this time from the Bort No 30 &31 blue. The version of the missile was obviously w/o the real warhead and missile itself didn't have those orange colored 'panels/windows' on the cone section skin.

Not shot down but jammed to miss their target. 26 this year over 4 months and 58 since some point last year, which is well inside the 15/month production rate.

That shows a pure ballistic arc, that isn't how Kinzhal or Iskander flies AFAIK.

You know what I was talking about. It is impossible to jamm incoming Kinzhal. It will be easier to physically intercept (shot down) it then jamm/spoof it.

If someone announced that he jammed 26 Kinzhal missiles from the beginning of this year, than it is in fact, not war propaganda but nothing than lie, big lie.To say ,yes, we jammed /spoofed several of it ,OK ,but 26 ,yeah. Maybe one day ,we will hear that they jammed Oreshnik missiles.

It can't be seen what was hit there.

Aha .... US /Ukr. sources :

I've already described what is so called quasi-ballistic missile trajectory.

If Kinzhal has a datalink, it has an opening for an electronic attack.

I suspect that calling it jamming is a gross simplification for journalist idiots.
You're trying to argue that a country that's unable to reliable jam rather simple, slow flying, long range drones running on low cost multi-channel receivers is able to jam a ballistic missile that travels several times the speed of sound, has several modes of guidance including INS and is only receiving active guidance in form of small adjustments for the handful of minutes that are it's flight duration following launch.

Something, something "1015% interception rates", something, something "twitter posts with red crosses over selected Google Images". Yeah I wouldn't buy that story even if it was free.

Multichannels are really hard to jam, that's why they're used.

And it's claimed that the designers of the datalinks used by the Kinzhal live in Ukraine.
